Reading my second book by Luke Kennard this year, and he hasn’t disappointed me yet.
An excerpt from the novel ‘Black Bag,’ by Luke Kennard:

“Inside black bag I close my eyes.
You cannot try to see yourself the way others do, Birgitta says, putting a slab of marzipan on my tin plate. Isn't that all we ever do? No, she says. Doing that will make you nuts. Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.”

I watched Jaws with my aunt when I was 7 or 8. For months afterward I was terrified that a shark was going to make its way to the Gulf of Mexico, up the freshwater Mississippi River to one of its minor tributaries, then travel 3 miles over land to come crashing through my bedroom window and eat me.

really kinda sucks that, across the globe, we don’t have majorities of voters who think far right authoritarianism is bad If I had to sum it up it seems like 40% of voters are anti authoritarian 40% of voters are pro authoritarian 20% of voters just want cheap burgers

Look, I completely agree that Trump voters should be shamed mercilessly. But we should also acknowledge that they’re wearing that dunce cap because they put it on themselves, not because of any shrewd political strategy from the Dems

I just realized that one of my pastor friends has been the head of every congregation he’s been part of for the past 10 years, and that strikes me as unhealthy. It seems like every pastor should have to (or get to) be part of a church where they’re not the ones calling the shots all the time.

This is why I don’t have a lot of hope for us even after Trump is gone. The deficit balloons under the GOP; we replace them with Dems who implement austerity measures; Americans are extremely averse to sacrifice, so we vote GOP in the next election cycle. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Yes, absolutely. I teach around 70 students per semester, never get to be in an actual classroom with any of them, and I work a non-academic full-time job on top of all that. I would love the luxury of being able to have in-depth conversation and oral exams for my students. But that ain’t happening.

My main thought with this article is really need AI takes from outside elite liberal arts schools bubble. “Just have in-depth searching conversations w/ your handful of students and then give each 45 min oral exams!” This has no relevance to most professors or students at most schools in the country

I stopped using AI detection after all of two (2) semesters. To be honest, the easiest way to tell if students used generative AI is when 10 out of a class of 35 submit writing that includes the exact same oddly-phrased opinion that ultimately doesn’t have anything to do with the initial question

There are so many shows on here that are great during the first two seasons and then become unwatchable. The Handmaid’s Tale started out poignant before turning into torture porn that happens solely because of June’s poor decisions. Ted Lasso is endearing until it’s grating

The sunny side of this delusion is the computer gives you a flying car and makes it so you don't have to work. The blackpill one is that it wipes us out via some cinematic method TBD. Two futures you don't actually have to live in. Both are abdications, and embarrassingly childish on their face.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
