There is something deeply wrong with trying to kill a person twice, then sending her to a hospital for life saving measures so that they can try to kill her again.

Gonna be a reckoning with millennial clergy and lay leaders who assume only acceptable political orientations are “right” or “neither left nor right” (meaning right).

Going to an event in Manhattan with NT Wright at 7:00 means getting on NJ Transit at 5:00 to slog through one of the nation’s worst rush hours. Fare is $5.45 but the driver didn’t have change for my $20 (rookie mistake). We should get to Port Authority at 6:00 at this rate and I AM HUNGRY

You can sense the undertone throughout of “haha those fucking rubes got what they deserved” but the more interesting (and unexplored) idea hiding throughout is just how bad the information ecosystem is — almost all the people interviewed are drawing on the idea of criminal illegals!

A lot of Buddhist scriptures simply teach the opposite, especially post-Mahayana: the Buddha, who was enlightened eons before his historical appearance, simulated his struggles and sufferings on earth all as a pedagogical demonstration for his followers on their path to enlightenment.

On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.

The idea that political messaging needs to incorporate a narrative of community is not unclear or wishy-washy, and the success of the no kings protests are due in no small part to the fact that it taps into centuries of American mythology.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

I talk about this a good bit in the article, but in case it wasn’t clear: a mainline megachurch, while not unprecedented (they used to be more of a thing), is striking to behold in 2026. It feels like it couldn’t exist in this political era. But there it is, with thousands in the pews.

This was the only part of The End of Reading Is Here that hit for me because, like.....I personally would never. But my dad???? My dang ol' dad??? Would.
Reading has come to seem extraneous even to some of the best-educated members of society. Margaret Rennix, Harvard’s assistant director for humanities and social-sciences support, told me she’d spoken with a student who was struggling to read a book written in Old English. The culprit: Anthony Burgess’s 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange. (The student used ChatGPT to “translate” the book into easier language.) Not long ago, a Harvard sociology professor, troubled by course evaluations in which students said they resented the amount of dense reading they were assigned, asked Rennix to speak to his class in defense of reading. She had to explain—to students at America’s most elite university, taking a course in a discipline rooted in written observation, argumentation, and analysis—that excerpts and summaries cannot capture the depth and sophistication of a complete primary text. Rennix told me that some students now view reading as an unnecessarily burdensome way of acquiring knowledge. “By asking them to read,” she said, “professors are arbitrarily withholding information from students by forcing them to get it through this more difficult medium.”

Cooking up something for an "Anglican 101" class tomorrow evening on liturgy. ⚓
What is liturgy?

Greek, Leitourgia — “public work,” “public service,” “work done for the people,” “ministry”

Hebrews 8.6 KJV / But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Christian liturgy is the Church’s regular and common means of receiving the Gospel.
In liturgical formation the Church learns to hear the Gospel, love the Gospel, and to be renewed by the Gospel.

Romans 1.16 RSV / For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith… for in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith…

Matthew 11.28 RSV / Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

What is the core of the Gospel? The Paschal Mystery

See Pascha Nostrum (I Corinthians 5.7-8; Romans 6.9-11; I Cor. 15.20-22), in BCP pp. 46/83

I Corinthians 5.7b-8a NIV / For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival.

How is the Gospel regularly received? Word & Sacrament
