If you can’t think of a story or illustration for your sermon maybe your sermon just doesn’t need one this week. God’s grace can be known in the text and the world for those with eyes to see and without an anecdote 📕

Successfully got a bunch of catechumens singing from the plainsong psalter for the first time today. Universally positive feedback. “Plainsong isn’t accessible to the average parishioner”? Skill issue. Teach them. They love it. 🕯️

Counterpoint anecdote, 335 is one of our evening service praise band’s staples, and the congregation joins in wholeheartedly.

It’s super ironic that for the “Season of Creation” we are wiping out whole forests to print massive service leaflets with bespoke liturgies. Want to honor creation? Just use the BCP. 📕

I'll say, I'm ok with the pseudo Francis quote if what it leads to is lives so radically different from everyone else that people can't help but ask you "why are you this way?" rather than what it usually means which is "smile more at your cashier"

So here's the real take-away most people are waiting for from the TEC Trajectory study: what distinguishes growing from declining parishes and can declining parishes... do what growing parishes do? #TECTrajectory 🕯️

imo kids should absolutely be in the sanctuary with the rest of the body of Christ for the entire service if possible. Yes they’re gonna squirm. Yes they’re gonna be disruptive. But how will they learn how to act in church if they never experience it? How do they learn the tradition but by doing it?

Thinking about preaching Romans this week and it really is a shame that nothing in Rite 2 or EOW has quite the same force as "and here we present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee."🕯️

Absolutely this. A priest I know *refuses* to celebrate the BCP’s Good Friday liturgy because he doesn’t like it. Instead, he adapts portions of it and cobbles something together from other resources. The result: denying a third of the Triduum’s liturgy to the parish. Liturgical narcissism.

Heard one theory that maybe the boat wasn’t as far from the shore as they thought it was (the storm would’ve obscured how close the shore was), and they might’ve just seen Jesus walking in the very shallow water 🙄

Formation either happens after church on Sundays or in the evening (“Soup ‘n’ study” combo was a big hit last Lent). Pastoral meetings tend to be flexible based on the individual’s availability—evenings, their day off, or even after church on a Sunday.

This is only half true; our apostolic line comes from both Scottish Episcopalians (via Samuel Seabury) and the Church of England (via William White and Samuel Provost). We *are* members of the Anglican Communion, and heirs to the Anglican tradition that transcends any one province.

Maybe I’m not clued in enough to recognize a dog whistle, but adherents of the school (Earth & Altar Mag, for example), seem largely representative of the official position of TEC. Can you explain what makes you feel queasy?

Again, as I’ve encountered the label, it’s an attempt to say “we don’t cross our fingers when we say the creed, we believe the words we pray in the liturgy, we fully affirm the participation of all in the life of the Church regardless of gender or sexuality.”

fr. ryan @rtlockwood.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I’ve not encountered anyone who wears the label who’s said that last one (doesn’t mean they don’t exist). I’m not sure what you mean by “the straight way.” The Episcopal Church *isn’t* in full communion with the Methodists, partly because that question of Apostolicity still needs to be hashed out

fr. ryan @rtlockwood.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
For me, it’s a good shorthand for “Creedal, traditional doctrine/liturgy is fully compatible with acceptance and celebration of persons of all genders and sexualities in the full life of the Church.” Contra the Spong school, traditional doctrine is not holding the Church back.

This ministry is an absolute gift. I didn’t “get” the psalms until I learned to chant them. And this way, you’re never chanting them on your own.

The collect today is a banger. We do need the leaders of our church to realize that self-denying is their first duty. Not getting more power, more prestige, or a more money. Sacrifice first. ⚓️
O gracious God, we remember before thee this day thy servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that thou wilt pour out upon the leaders of thy Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among thy people; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Today marks one year since ordination as a priest in Christ’s church. Parts of this job are really hard. Parts are spectacularly beautiful. All of it has been grace. This is good work, friends. 🕯️

fr. ryan @rtlockwood.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
This is *a* theory, but is by no means universal within TEC/Anglicanism, and represents a pretty drastic departure from the understanding of ordination inherited from the pre reformation English church.

Different perspective here. Cooperation between the Spirit and the human agents—was it the Holy Spirit or Mary’s “yes” that facilitated the Incarnation? Both. Priests are uniquely commissioned and charismed to represent the People to God and God to the People. Ordination is necessary, as is Spirit.

Reminder that we've been robbed of the best verses of "What Child is this." The original text doesn't have "this this is Christ the king..." as a refrain. Past me went to the trouble of adding the rest of verses 1 and 2 back into my hymnal. Always fun to find these surprises. 🕯️

My liturgy prof said it shouldn’t, and I understand the argument. But we also believe that the cross is central to the whole Gospel, so its presence along with the Gospel procession is a reminder that we read the whole thing through the lens of the cross. So imo both practices are valid.

Well-intentioned progressive Christians are especially susceptible to this. We aren’t called to build the kingdom or bring it to earth; the kingdom is coming whether we’re ready for it or not. Our job is to make disciples and live in such a way that we point to the coming of that kingdom. 🕯️
