Ontario Lacus is a hydrocarbon lake near the south pole of Saturn’s moon Titan. Measuring 235 kilometers long by 75 kilometers across, Ontario Lacus is slightly smaller than its terrestrial counterpart, Lake Ontario. Lakes on Titan are named after lakes on Earth that are roughly the same size.
RADAR SAR image of Ontario Lacus. Ontario is a dark, footprint-shaped feature in the middle of the frame. Hills surround Ontario Lacus to the north, marked by bright, rough terrain in this SAR image.

Dealing with a frustrating equipment situation in one of my part time science jobs but at least the user manual has got jokes

I aggressively embrace an "if you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts / just repeat to yourself 'it's just a show, I should really just relax'" ethos with fiction, so it was a new and weird experience having something really test my limits tonight (my usually-beloved* SNW).

Wildly overselling their class's benefits may be my favorite Stock Teacher Joke. In a class for UH-60L pilots to learn to fly UH-60Ms: Instructor, after hearing my fulltime job: So are you gonna be an astronaut? Me: Applied, no luck so far. Keyboard shortcuts to change text color without lifting my fingers from the keyboard. Red for placeholder text, green for things I need to fact-check, blue for wording that sucks, black for final-ish text. Somehow color-coding a first draft makes it easier for me to let a sentence be bad & move on.

Cú Chulainn gets called everything from Coca-Cola to Choo-Choo Train by his friends and caretakers, but we got a new one from the vet's office today: Garth. Mail merge error, I assume, but considering we already occasionally call him Andraste's Mabari (iykyk) I'm adding Garth to the nickname list.
A medium-sized brindle dog with black ears and muzzle (Cú Chulainn, or maybe Garth) is disappointed in me.

That S3 will continue next year is *really* helpful to know. Still unsure whether Congress approving a larger budget would actually mean more funding, how best to avoid playing myself with the year-between-resubmissions rule in the current environment, etc. but at least that's one question answered.

Senator Kelly is correct. Plus a Public Service Announcement: KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1. The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal: "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

Introduce yourself with four spaceships.
The cockpit of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Two bare-bones chairs, a lot of 70s/80s monitors with system indications, and even more analog switches and readouts. The bridge of the Star Cruiser Halcyon, late of Star Wars / Walt Disney World. Several huge viewports overlooking a blue planet, a blue central table, and a dozen or two consoles with assorted toggles/switches. The ship's atrium is visible through a large pill-shaped window opposite the forward viewports. The Command Information Center of the Normandy SR-2 from Mass Effect, with a large holographic galaxy map at the center.Several consoles from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise as seen in Strange New Worlds, with monitors showing displays of ship systems in orange and white edge lighting on almost every surface.

I met the world's cutest integrating sphere at NIST this week.
A blue on the outside, white on the inside integrating sphere (object that scatters light that enters through one of its apertures around its inside surface to homogenize it before it enters a detector). The position of one of the bottom holes makes one of the top holes look like a big, cute cartoon eye.
