🌕 The Harvest Moon arrives Saturday — and it’s not just another full moon. Around this time of year, the Moon rises at unusually similar times on successive evenings — a quirk of astronomy that once gave farmers extra evening light. Why it happens: www.capitalweather.com/the-harvest-...

There’s a full Moon rising. The Harvest Moon is the full Moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox. This year, it's on Saturday, Sept. 26. As the Harvest Moon rises in the east shortly after sunset, Saturn will appear nearby. Take a moment to look up and enjoy the view.

Just remembered this book. Reading this as a kid completely rewired my brain. I started mining pedantry for comedy as soon as I knew how to read and it was all because this kid got arrested, asked for a short sentence, got "I am." I would jump at it, because one of my fondest memories from college on LonGisland was when we put in naively raunchy personal ads for each other in the New York Times and then just howled with laughter at the responses. If it's good enough for Tom Tomorrow it's good enough for me.

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

Collage of images: The Moon, with the Apollo 15 landing region (Hadley-Apennine) outlined and labeled, overlaps with a photo of an astronaut reaching out to touch a rover on the lunar surface. In the same photo, behind the astronaut, a dramatically shadowed grey hill rises towards a black sky. In the sky, text reads “International Observe the Moon Night” “September 19, 2026”. Along the bottom edge is a partial, zoomed-out screenshot view of a Moon Map document, with highlighted areas of the Moon, close-up photos, and location labels.

Crater Fact Friday ☄️ DID YOU KNOW ☄️ The South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin is one of the largest (~2,500 km) and oldest (4.3 billion yrs) impact basins in the solar system? SPA is important because this basin and its ejecta can help us better understand the early solar system and its violent history.
Topographic map of the South Pole–Aitken basin based on Kaguya data. Red represents high elevation, purple represents low elevation. The purple and grey elliptical rings trace the inner and outer walls of the basin. (The black ring is an old artifact of the image.)The Moon's largest impact feature, the South Pole–Aitken basin, is so named because it stretches between Aitken crater and the south pole.
