In short, @buddyyakov.bsky.social is right. There are no adults left in the room, Fed and Treasury. Completely uncharted territory. 7/

They are right. Inflation above target and a substantial current-account deficit tell you U.K. needs to spend less and save more. Tighter fiscal policy would facilitate this and let rates fall…

Plans to drill for more North Sea oil & gas are worrying not because they'll burn the planet - the amount is too small for that - but because they're a symptom that Burnham is kowtowing to the wrong people.

Why Ed Miliband should be the UK's next chancellor
Andy Burnham is likely to be the next UK prime minister.

Neither the new PM or proposed chancellor have shown any substantive interest/knowledge of the economy. This won’t end well. Again.

But there is an argument that good Labour chancellors have been intellectuals (Jenkins, Healey, Brown). They also had the heft to push back against No10.

Investors are sceptical the UK’s macro policy institutions can deliver low inflation and a sustained improvement in the fiscal position. This suggestion doesn’t solve that problem. The UK government needs to prove it’s serious in wanting to reduce deficits/debt and won’t resort to higher inflation.

In which the US president tells you implicitly and then explicitly that they are not on control of events and indeed that they do not know what is happening. The intention, of course, is to bully and give an impression of exercising power, but the impression conveyed is the opposite.

It's so exhausting to to be constantly told by American leaders that the defining policy of the 80 odd years during which the US became the most wealthy and powerful country in the history of the world was a grossly unfair failure for them.

It’s another conspiracy of silence. Conservatives don’t want to admit they massively increased taxes on high earners. Labour definitely don’t want to say so; they still want to peddle the idea that others, the rich, can pay more. Truth is if we want more spending we’ll all have to pay more.

It was but markets don’t trust Labour to deliver spending restraint and so will want to see credible plans for sustained higher taxes. We don’t have that yet.

Reeves has to tighten fiscal policy, but the budget shows she doesn’t want to do that. Markets are rightly nervous about likely spending overshoots and an unwillingness to raise taxes enough to constrain borrowing.

The lesson that Germany should learn (France has already) is that bad equilibriums are easy to get into and require policy change to get out of. Germany is in one now: it needs tax/labour market reforms and public investment to raise spending. France needs a credible, slow, fiscal tightening.

This kind of language is so like the way the Tory Brexiteers used to talk about trade. For them Brexit was a means to achieve 'free trade'. Reeves' Labour mean 'no new trade barriers that we haven't already chosen ourselves for reasons of overriding domestic political convenience.'
