A chart showing new EV & PHEV sales over the years. The market absolutely fell out when the new National govt had a fucking insane idea to stop incentives to get EVs, then when Trump thought he should start a war instead of going to jail for being a Pedo & fuel prices went through the roof, EV sales have risen again

This is great, but, for context, just driving less also "saved" hundreds of millions. In Q2 2026 oil consumption was down 93 million litres (5%) compared to normal (thus "saving" $158m), while the 12k EVs sold "saved" 5 million litres.

NZ: Oil consumption fell more than 10% in the second quarter of 2026. Since oil is such a dominant part (>75%) of our CO2 emissions, this took quarterly emissions back to their lowest since March 1996, more than 30 years ago. The drop was even fast than that during the GFC in 2008. [1/2]

PHANZA stands in support of staff at Archives NZ and the National Library, who are facing proposed cuts that would eliminate 47 FTE roles across two institutions that are vital to the work of our members. Read PHANZA's press release below and please share widely with your networks.
Press Release: 3 September 2026

Job losses at Archives New Zealand and the National Library will harm access to history

Yesterday, PHANZA received news about a proposed restructure at two institutions that are vital to the work of professional historians.
The proposed cuts would eliminate 47 roles across the two organisations. The Public Service Association has indicated this represents 12% of the workforce and comes on top of earlier redundancies.

Libraries and archives provide vital knowledge infrastructure. As sources of information, their collections support innovation and discovery, foster an informed citizenry, and protect our collective national memory. Job losses also raise alarming questions about institutional ability to fulfil the government’s legal deposit and record-keeping obligations

Historians fundamentally rely on archives and libraries. We could not do our jobs without the collections management undertaken by highly qualified and community-minded professionals who already achieve so much with limited resources. Ongoing cuts and staffing reductions place archivists and librarians in an impossible position.

Reductions in staffing levels at national institutions charged with acquiring, safeguarding, and providing access to our collective history will meaningfully diminish the public's ability to access these taonga. As professional historians, we are especially concerned about how the proposed cuts will affect our ability to effectively research topics and areas of significance to families, communities, and government.

With the upcoming election on 7 November, PHANZA encourages its members and the public to engage with candidates and political parties about their support for cultural institutions and to advocate for maintaining public access to these national treasures.

From Hazel Petrie's review of Charlotte Macdonald's "Garrison World: Redcoat soldiers in New Zealand and across the British Empire" landfallreview.com/marching-to-...
Chapter Nine includes an insightful comment made by the English philosopher and political economist John Stuart Mill in a letter to his friend Henry Chapman in 1866. He wrote that it was ‘not the behaviour of the aboriginal peoples that had proven the problem … but the behaviour of Britons living “under new conditions” in territories they now claimed as their own’. I was reminded of that observation when I received an unexpected phone call from an upset friend overseas who had just encountered two tourists from New Zealand. Both were immigrants, one English and the other from Western Europe. They told her that the English language was dying out in New Zealand and asserted that only Māori received treatment in public hospitals, before offering several other extraordinary examples of alleged ‘Māori privilege’. When she asked why they remained in Aotearoa New Zealand if things were so bad, the Englishwoman replied: ‘It is a Commonwealth country … I am entitled to live there.’ Her response confirms that what Macdonald describes as ‘garrison sovereignty’, imposed through the violence so eloquently described in this volume, continues to flourish.
