110 years ago today the New Zealand Division launched its first attack on the Somme during the First World War in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. My great grandfather 3/1742 Sgt Teddy Dillion 3 NZ Field Ambulance was there and his diary entry simply concludes, “It was Hellish.”

110 years ago on the last Sunday in August 1916 my great-grandfather 3/1742 Sgt Edward Dillon 3 NZ Field Ambulance, of Invercargill, wrote in his diary: Mac and I go to Airaines to see Joe Haberfield. Met several Gore boys and arrived home at 9pm after a very decent evening. #OnTheWayToTheSomme110

"We shot New Zealanders, didn't we? 110 years ago Private Frank Hughes was executed by firing squad for desertion on 25 August (on his grave) or 26 August 1916 (this order in his service file) at Hallencourt, Somme, France. He was the first of five New Zealanders executed during WWI. #ShotAtDawn
