Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

You can have a family with children in the US and live car-free. My kids are now well-rounded high schoolers excelling in school, sports, and music—we didn’t need a car to achieve this. How? You have to live in a city that’s walkable and ideally has decent bike infrastructure or public transit.

UBI would lead to advancements and delights we can’t even conceive of now. But the payoff of 100million tiny bets isn’t that a few thousand people will go on to change the future (though they surely will). It’s the dignity and decreased suffering of each person on the other end of the bet.
