I just learned that I'll save ~$800 on my home insurance by switching from Liberty Mutual to Allstate. LM wasn't expensive--every year when my policy is up for renewal, I get a few other quotes to compare. Allstate's premium just went down A LOT this year, at least for me.

The Ed Sheeran / Macklemore situation really disturbed me, not because I had an issue with Sheeran not supporting the Palestinian cause. It's more about free expression and it's a high profile example of how free expression is being gradually suppressed.

Yes! Image a future where parents put their kids in driverless cars to take them to school while they themselves get in different cars to go to work. Instead of one or two cars chaining trips, now you might have four separate cars making four separate trips. Would be a disaster at scale.

Is it worth getting a sewing machine? I’ve had like 3 relatively new tshirts have their stitching come undone in the past year. Never had that happen before. Presumably a result of enshittification. 😢 I’ll probably just take these to my local cleaners to get fixed.

So the new US News and World Report college rankings are out and even though I'm not one to believe rankings are everything, I do think school reputation matters when looking for a job and rankings are a proxy (albeit imperfect) for that, especially in a tough job market for college grads.

It’s sad that US stadiums are almost all surrounded by a sea of car parking. Compare to UK stadiums where almost none of them have visible car parking around stadium. Even stadiums in small/medium cities which presumably have worse transit than London don’t have parking! youtu.be/Rlm4aoyEq8o?...

Parents in Philadelphia should consider themselves *fortunate* to be able to send their kids to public schools. There will likely be no other time in their kids' lives when they'll have the opportunity to spend their day and even make friends with people from diverse backgrounds. It is a gift.

As a parent, the best thing you can do for your children is to put them in environments where they have classmates and friends who come from different socio-economic backgrounds. They will become empathetic to different perspectives and be better equipped to thrive in a diverse society.

Rich white parents get concerned about overuse of technology in schools. They should be more concerned about their kids growing up in a bubble where everyone else is rich and white. Choosing private schools may solve some issues but raising your kids in an elitist bubble does more harm.

Yes, have respect for people and cultures that came before you and that are still here. Don't be an asshole. Contribute to your community. Be a good neighbor. But "I've lived here for X years and therefore I am more authentically of this place" is not a competition anyone can win.

My beef with people negatively referring to others as "transplants" is that it's rooted in othering and scapegoating. There is nothing good in making generalizations about a group of people just because they weren't born there. It's completely illogical and says more about your own prejudices.

I think and hope we've moved on from peak anti-"transplant" progressive NIMBY rhetoric where people would try to argue that you should not move into "gentrifying" neighborhoods and thus be part of the "problem".

People who rant about "transplants" think they're entitled to more power just because they've lived there longer. Unfortunately for them, that's not how democracy works; or it's not how it should work. Everyone gets 1 vote regardless of how long they've lived there, how much they make, etc.

I just ignore people who rant against “transplants”. It’s wild there are people who can’t imagine ever moving to another place. Or maybe if they move, of course they wouldn’t be a “transplant”. 🤔 There’s almost always implied racism, xenophobia, scapegoating with these people.

The NFL as a whole benefits from anti-trust exemption. The stadiums are publicly financed. It's a multi-level scheme of enormous wealth extracted from the public. Will highlights how it's particularly vile in Philly, but what he writes about specifically applies generally everywhere.

My immigrant parents put me in public school because they couldn't afford private school. In hindsight, I think I turned out to be a more grounded person because of it. Some folks think that because I "made it", I should put my kids in private school to give them the privilege I can now afford.

Ugh, I hope white/Asian/privileged parents don't read this and use it as an excuse for putting their kids in the "best" school they can for their kids. Every situation is different and not all school catchment boundaries present such a stark disparity based on what side of the street you live on.
