Applies to Mpls too: “Half of [St.P’s] budget is spent on Cops & Cars (47%) & if you’re a person who wants to solve finances with cuts & you’re not talking about cutting either of those things then not only are you not taking the budget seriously, you’re not even taking your own premise seriously.”

One of the best pieces of evidence that Todd Barnette was asleep at the wheel was him floundering at council meetings. Public meetings are essential to government transparency. Giving it up because you're fond of Jacob Frey and hate a particular group of council members is dangerously short sighted.

the recent spectacles that come to my mind involving department heads at council meetings have been O'Hara and Barnette pleading ignorance to questions about what's going on with the overspending in their departments.
“Is this about having questions answered so that better laws can be passed, or is this about creating a spectacle?” Frey said. “I don't want a circus."

(I’ll also say that the enrollment numbers have been stable post-COVID, despite his snipe about the decrease from a decade ago, and the “meaty raises” he refers to have - largely at MFE’s behest - been concentrated towards raising pay for support staff and new/early career teachers.)

They hint at that in some ways with the “reduced overhead” language. Also, it was pointed out that the recent Board resolutions guiding this process do not really mention cost-savings as a driving consideration for any “transformation” process, so I’m not shocked staff didn’t highlight it.

ryan @rkmpls.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think he’s maybe a little off-base pointing only to MFE re: layoff concerns. “reducing overhead” imo would hit Food Service and Custodians (SEIU) and Clerical (AFSCME) much more than it would hit classroom staff. Also, other side of “union-protecting” is “valuing and retaining your employees”…

instead of "gee whiz, must be hard when the city council isn't on the side of the police" we should ask, "why have you ordered MPD not to stand for questions in front of the city council, re: $21 million in overspending, at the same time you're requesting an 11% tax increase?"

Minneapolis is one of the most liberal places in the U.S., home to a specific brand of inclusive and effective progressivism. Minnesota is the birthplace of charter schools and anti-labor corporatists have convinced many Mpls liberals/progressives that public schools are bad. Both things are true!

I'm going to take you a little too literally here and say: a) MPS finance has been without senior leadership for ~8 months now, with the folks responsible gone b) those roles have been filled by a consulting firm, which has helped gain revenue by fixing those issues, but not saved on expenses
030
ryan @rkmpls.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
(to be clear, i think this makes it worse...i just think leaders have decided that "cost savings" is not a valid/attractive primary reason to be doing this, so they've come up with the "MPS experience" thing and are downplaying the budget aspect)
010
ryan @rkmpls.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
fwiw, there are indications in the report that they do expect this to save money via reduced overhead. i just think leaders are hesitant to publicly quantify much of those hypothetical savings, as they'd probably be coming from reduced SEIU/AFSCME/Principal headcounts...

I’m also a little miffed by the claim that it was “our approach” that led to this deal falling through. Charlie contends that we could have extracted a lot of concessions from this developer, but it seems they've walked away before any real concrete asks were even made?
