The Chief Engineer also seems to have important input in decisions on priorities (e.g. power to life support vs shields) and pushing systems outside their normal operating parameters ("the engines cannae take it"). These can't be handed off to a computer.

Not William of Normandy's men, but I took this photo in August from the ramparts of the Mont Saint-Michel: horses crossing the vast sands of the Bay at low tide. What a magnificent view. #BayeuxTapestry #quicksand #Couesnon #MontSaintMichel
A line of horses with riders crossing the sand. Photo taken from the ramparts of the Mont Saint-Michel so the horses are small and distant; the land / marais beyond the edge of the sand is visible in the far distance.

Frog got a ladder. He put the box up on a high shelf. “There,” said Frog. “Now we will not eat any more cookies.” “But we can climb the ladder and take the box down from the shelf and cut the string and open the box,” said Toad. “That is true,” said Frog.
Frog climbs a ladder and hides the cookies high on a shelf.

For avoidance of doubt, blocking is fine and etiquette should be better. I was just noting how weird it makes me feel to read threats of punishment.

I do hope these guardians of morality practise what they preach. In particular, I hope a big fish never uses people's unwillingness to lose access to their "content" to get away with being mean and sneery.

Whenever a Bluesky "celebrity" announces how they block for any infringement of etiquette, I always feel an almost overwhelming urge to reply with something insulting even though I never would otherwise. And that's what makes me think I have pathological demand avoidance.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

A lot of left-wing people look like they’re susceptible to the “Shire theory” put about by Elon Musk - the hobbits’ freedom is a lovely thing but it depends on strong, ruthless men controlling the perimeter and doing surveillance. Human rights become an aspiration not a baseline.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: an emo teenager is sitting with his family at a table in a casual restaurant. While his parents chat, he looks at another table solemnly. There is a dark aura emanating off him. Panel 2: a similar scene across the restaurant- an emo girl with her family; her little brother is absolutely housing a cheeseburger. She stares back at the guy across the restaurant, while also emitting a dark aura. Panel 3: the two teenagers eyes are locked on each other. In a shared thought bubble, which drowns out all the surrounding ambience, they imagine themselves as anthropomorphic wolves, embracing while they ride a motorcycle down a dark and lonely road through the black of night.
