I jokingly refer to it as "The War in Heaven" but 4chan becoming the seed from which so much more of broader Internet culture emerged from really does explain a lot. It's a kind of genealogy of antisocial norms and nihilism that many modern branches can find their roots in 4chan.

One of the reasons we are in the quagmire we are in is because the antisocial nihilism or "edgelord" culture of 4chan more or less won the war to define large chunks of Internet culture back in 2013-2014 against Tumblr.
