I used to use ketamine to anesthetize 600-800 lb elk cows in Yellowstone. I can't believe that anybody who has taken this drug at the doses used non-clinically, is in control of their faculties and most certainly cannot consent.

I sometimes check in with my undergrad classes to see if they're keeping up to date on current affairs. They usually are not. The reaction I got when I asked if they knew what was happening at Cornell was dramatic. When I asked if they were getting anything from Penn State ... crickets.

A thing I want everyone to appreciate is that elections are the start of change, not the end. Change requires elections, debate, compromise, legislation, funding, enforcement. If you hope the world will be meaningfully different on 4 Nov 2026 you'll be disappointed.

I want to teach a class on "college tactics as life lessons". Lesson 1 will be, if you don't know the answer, don't make one up. Lesson 2 will be, if you can't remember lesson 1, do NOT make up a complicated answer.

Of the many things that I hate about the "died with, not because of, measles" discourse is that it is being advanced by the same folks who will submit a report to VAERS about a traffic accident 2 months after a vaccination.

This is a great metaphor for contemporary America. In both cases each person gets the same (average) amount of wet. But in reality, under the current administration, one person stays dry and the others get drenched.

In the 80s Nike paid the $5000 per game fine for Michael Jordan to wear red and black Air Jordan 1s. Even if the story is disputed (it is), Nike profited from the perception that they took on this fine. A life and the perception of valuing life seems like it should be worth this much.

Two things can be true: 1) poor wording that mistakenly disqualifies the victims of sexual exploitation from serving should be changed 2) If you're leader of the organization making that change and can't communicate it in a way that doesn't make a mockery, you're not fit to be the leader

I think about this episode of The Moth by Adam Savage (yeah, Mythbusters) a lot. He wrestles with how to talk to his young sons about sex on the internet. He concludes that the simplest explanation is , if the internet was a person, its actions and content clearly indicate someone who hated women.

Following the horrific news of measles infection in a pregnant woman in Lancaster PA it's worth a reminder that the re-emergence rubella virus is likely to follow measles. Rubella infection in pregnancy causes entirely preventable outcomes that used to be so well known they were plot lines.

Last May I wrote something for my Dad's memorial about his unending love of practice and his deep aversion to perfection. I've been thinking about it and the beauty and meaning in practice a lot in light of the ongoing discussion about LLMs and genAI.
Many people spend their lives pursuing perfection, all of them fail. My dad loved the pursuit itself, and his success lay in a lifetime of that pursuit.

It is unclear to me whether he even thought perfection was possible. The things he most admired were spontaneous or fleeting.

The pottery strewn about the house is fired for days out of hands of the potter. The final product is more revealed than it is completed.

The calligraphy he loved is just a record of a well swept brush and hand that is known only to the artist, and briefly at that.

He made a career of creating beauty out of corporate ephemera that was replaced in a year.

But he believed that the most beautiful things in life came from practice, almost endless practice … because to reach an end would be have no further path to enjoy.

I’ll admit, that philosophy was tough to swallow as a kid. And I think, at times, it was a frustrating and unglamorous path for my Dad.

He was the first in his generation. And as such he took on his role as foundation and an example. It’s a role for which he received little praise and asked for even less.

But all of us here have been influenced and inspired by my Dad’s example. He believed that a thing that could be done, could be done better.

And we are each here are taller and stronger for standing on the foundation he laid.
