This is Gwendolyn, she is the familiar(?) of a witch (?) NPC in my #Starfinder #ttrpg campaign. She enjoys cuddling up next to visiting guests, long soaks in the thermal pond next to the hut, and getting her "nails" painted. So far she has elicited decidedly mixed reactions from the party.

For some reason German publishers of (urban) fantasy tend to do a terrible job replacing (not translating!) the titles of many novels. My partner mostly reads in German, while I prefer English and it often takes guesswork or search to figure out if we have read the same book 😂

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

As it happens, Apocalypse World has a move for cooking a Michelin star meal. It's not a basic move, it's a playbook move, because not everybody cooks at that level. It works like this: What happen? On 10+: Pick 2 good things! On 7-9: Pick 1 good thing! On 6-: NBD but meal is still delicious.

The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

Being even more cynical I suspect that's *most* likely with IP RPGs whereas people writing their weird obsession project are much more likely to do it properly. (I recommend Bedlam Hall; it's the game that won me over from previously not thinking I liked *any* PbtA games).

Easiest something-goes-wrong is "you acquire a condition," and then the GM just has to figure out what that could be. Cooking - caught your hair on fire; "burnt hair" condition. Everyone's going to notice until you get it fixed. Research - headaches from eye strain. Lockpicking - sprained a finger.

Plus the example here is in a weird vague area that a lot of pbta designers struggle with: if I am a Michelin starred chef at an equivalent kitchen that is literally my day job, I probably shouldn’t even have to roll as it’s just part of my conversation, it’s not easy but it IS routine

On this one I think the "people are misunderstanding how it works" begs the question somewhat. People are misunderstanding that because a lot of PbtA designers don't bother writing out how it works properly.

learned about "Cryptic Crosswords" today and felt a primal fear i haven't felt in a long time. this is how people who've never played D&D or MtG must view these games. this is what World of Warcraft looks like to my mom.
For instance "Type of tree (3)" in a regular crossword could be any of "ASH", "BAY", "ELM", "FIG", "FIR" "OAK", "YEW", etc. "Type of tree has changed (3)" in a cryptic crossword can only be "ASH".

Here is an example (taken from the Guardian crossword of 6 August 2002, set by "Shed").

15D Very sad unfinished story about rising smoke (8)

is a clue for TRAGICAL. This breaks down as follows.

15D indicates the location and direction (down) of the solution in the grid
    "Very sad" is the definition
"unfinished story" gives TAL (tale with one letter missing; i.e., unfinished)
"rising smoke" gives RAGIC (a cigar is a "smoke", and this is a down clue so "rising" indicates that cigar should be written up the page; i.e., backwards)
"about" means that the letters of TAL should be put either side of RAGIC, giving TRAGICAL
"(8)" says that the answer is a single word of eight letters.

There are many codewords or indicators that have a special meaning in the cryptic crossword context. (In the example above, "about", "unfinished" and "rising" all fall into this category). Learning these, or being able to spot them, is a useful and necessary part of becoming a skilled cryptic crossword solver.

Compilers or setters often use slang terms and abbreviations, generally without indication, so familiarity with these is important for the solver. Abbreviations may be as simple as west = W, New York = NY, but may also be more difficult.[19] Words that can mean more than one thing are commonly exploited; often the meaning the solver must use is completely different from the one it appears to have in the clue. Some examples are:

It really gives the game away when the anti trans orgs are calling the election of the neo nazi party in Germany a "glimmer of hope."
A screenshot of an online article headline from "Inspecting Gender" by Genspect. The main heading reads: "Germany: A Glimmer of Hope for Sex Realists?" Below the title, the summary text asks: "Is the victory of the AfD in Germany a dark day for democracy or a glimmer of hope for sex realists? By David Allison." The bottom metadata displays the Genspect logo, "5 hours ago," and a "Listen" audio option button. In the top right corner, there is a teal "Subscribe" button alongside a circular profile avatar.

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are sitting at a table, in front of a game board set up with several character figurines and various pieces of landscape terrain. On the table is also a measuring tape and a scattering of dice.
Green: Okay, that makes six. How many points did we need to dodge that strike?
Blue: Eight.
Green: Oof.

Both of the foxes look at the board pensively.
Blue: I guess that concludes the campaign. Another party wiped out in their first combat encounter.
Green: At this point we're just feeding adventurers to highwaymen.
