As others have said, this is an example of a certifiably bad move or bad GM call, but I think it’s worth delving into why this example feels so relatable and pervasive. Because though you can pretty easily point out how this is against the rules and principles of PBTA, it’s also pretty common.

On this one I think the "people are misunderstanding how it works" begs the question somewhat. People are misunderstanding that because a lot of PbtA designers don't bother writing out how it works properly.

PbtA fans, here's my challenge to you. For the next 12 months, when somebody asks how PbtA works, tell them that normally a 10+ is a critical hit, a 7-9 is a hit, and a 6- is a compromise, but that unusually challenging or dangerous situations can bump itdown.

It doesn't help that plenty of PbtA games have been written by folks who didn't really understand Apocalypse World. Even if you don't like how they play, reading Apocalypse World and Monsterhearts will both up your RPG game (as Player or MC), especially if you can identify the aspects you dislike.

The GM doesn't generally get to make moves directly against the PCs unless they roll mixed or lower (or some other mechanic is in play). Challenges don't have their own turn/initiative. A perfect roll means the PCs retain initiative. A failure, the world gets initiative. A mixed is both together.

I have found that if struggling to find a "messy success" asking the player to better describe what they are trying to do leads to an obvious candidate most of the time, they'll add in descriptions of objects, or positioning etc that makes it both easier and for the player "Oh I see why it happened"

AW is a very well designed game but unfortunately it lead to a lot of really quite badly done PbtA hacks. And the nature of PbtA means that failures tend to crash and burn hard whereas a shit OSR game is generally just really boring.

Actual Plays have been great for the hobby. I have met many people who come to my club to roleplay after having watched an AP. Actual Plays have been dreadful for the hobby. They've normalised ENORMOUS eight player and a GM tables which, (esp in dnd) is just... a terrible experience. IMO.
