We see this sort of abuse even more so in video games (where people are regularly laid off after successful projects). People are more likely to accept an abusive business relationship for a job they love, which is why those jobs need unionization MORE, not LESS.

Thrilled the D&D team is getting involved. Unfortunately, a long term trend since Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast has been corporate abuse, most obviously seen in the regular holiday layoffs of staff. This should be great for the people AND for the game.

also a large map does not automatically mean more open space, you can still have combat mostly take place in a limited area, but with surrounding areas allowing players to tactically retreat without going "off map". A fight in a forest instead of always just fights in forest clearings
