Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

How could an associate professor in divinity at Cambridge be expected to know that lying is bad? thecritic.co.uk/mone...
Ah yes, James Orr. A lot of us had been hazy about what it is exactly that associate professors in a divinity department do all day. It doesn’t seem to involve a lot of work: Orr is often to be seen at Reform events in London, which take up the whole morning even for those of us with offices down the road. Now we know he was also sipping cocktails while discussing ways in which wealthy foreigners might be able to get round the laws that ban them donating to the party.

The associate professor of divinity was filmed explaining to an undercover reporter that so long as everyone kept their mouths shut, there was no way that the authorities would ever find out. Orr spent four years as a postdoctoral fellow in theology, ethics and public life at Oxford, and it would be fascinating to know at what point he developed this theory of What the Electoral Commission Don’t Know Won’t Hurt Them. Perhaps he was off sick the day they opened the gospel of Luke: “What you have said in the dark will be h

That money never even rested in my account! Nigel Farage struggles to explain the latest cash scandal. thecritic.co.uk/mone...
“I’ve got a statement here,” Nigel Farage began, unfolding a piece of paper. That’s how bad things were: the great off-the-cuffster had been handed a line to which he was required to stick. It was like Miles Davis announcing that he would be playing a medley of elevator music.

We were in Birmingham, at the conference of Reform, the greatest political party that money can buy. Last year, the conference was disrupted by a scandal over Angela Rayner, which meant the focus shifted to the Labour government. This year the party was taking no chances about losing the spotlight and had brought along its own scandal.

The Channel 4 report the previous evening had thrown the entire event into chaos. At 7am the story was denounced as a put-up by a far-left outfit, the videos edited. At 8am Farage had lost his closest aide, Dan Jukes, and his policy chief, James Orr. At 8.15am they were on a brief suspension, and by 9am Farage was explaining that they were mere “contractors”. With all respect to the BBC, the reason this story "matters" is not about whether it distracts from Reform's conference. It "matters" because it is important our leaders are not conspiring to break the law.

Populism in its Purest Form: my SKETCH of Nigel Farage's demand that the people of Clacton back his quest to keep his sources of cash secret. thecritic.co.uk/popu...
He’s off again! I feel like I’ve spent most of my life covering Nigel Farage’s departures from parts of public life, and yet every time I turn around, he’s popped back up, complaining about the unfairness of it all. Tuesday’s resignation from Parliament wasn’t even a real one: he’s leaving to fight a by-election on the great national issue of our time: should Nigel Farage have to explain who’s paying him?

We should be clear that the question isn’t whether the Reform leader should be allowed to accept millions of pounds in gifts, work for a TV channel, promote financial investments or take tens of thousands in speaking fees around the world. All of that is completely allowed. The only question is whether he should have to tell the rest of us about it. For some reason, this wasn’t exactly how he put it.

The harassment of my family over a few completely within-the-rules gifts from friends has gone in long enough! thecritic.co.uk/from...
All of this is, as I say, the kind of quite normal thing that any friend would do for another. Hutton might toss Oiky Ben a book he’s finished reading, and Oiky Ben might rent a five-storey house in Belgravia from which Hutton could work. Who keeps track of such things?

Far too much has been made of Ben’s habit of referring to Hutton by an affectionate nickname. After all, what could be more normal than one adult man calling another, to whom he is not related, “Daddy”? I assure you, such things happened all the time in the gulags where I spent my adolescence.

Then there is the matter of Oiky Ben’s so-called “conviction”. It is a sad thing when simply pleading guilty to fraud and going to jail is enough to see someone treated as a criminal. Which of us, after all, can honestly say we have not offered money laundering advice to undercover FBI agents? If a youthful mistake like that is enough to stop someone being able to buy things for a friend, then our public life will be a great dea

NIGEL FARAGE - AN APOLOGY. thecritic.co.uk/once...
NIGEL FARAGE — AN APOLOGY. Last week, I noted that since The Guardian revealed that he’d accepted a £5 million “gift” from a crypto-billionaire, the leader of Reform has carefully avoided places where people might ask him questions. In response, I find I’m now being shunned by Reform: when shame-vacuum finance spokesman Jenrick spoke on Monday morning, I was the only sketchwriter not invited.

To some journalists, the discovery that they were no longer going to have to attend events with Richard Tice would be a source of profound relief. Such hacks might take it as a compliment to have so riled the not-at-all fragile people who run Reform that they enacted petty revenge. But I am not that kind of writer. Goodness no.

So I would like to take this opportunity to say that I apologise for ever implying that Farage might be scared of questions. Quite the opposite: the leader of Reform is a giant among pygmies, a vigorously healthy man of tremendous moral and physical courage who has only

Farage claims that crypto-billionaire, Christopher Harborne, wanted “absolutely nothing in return” for giving Farage £5million. Meanwhile…
Revelations of the £5mn gift have led critics to allege that the money may have been a way of securing political favours from Farage, including his willingness to stand in the general election and take over leadership of the party again.
They also pointed out that Reform announced several crypto-friendly policies after the general election, including a pledge to lower the capital gains tax rate for crypto assets from 24 per cent today to 10 per cent, and to create a national bitcoin reserve at the Bank of England to stockpile crypto assets.
The party also took the unusual step of publishing a draft Cryptoassets and Digital Finance Bill, setting out exactly how it planned to deregulate the sector.
