When the public invests in new tech, the public should benefit.

That’s why our investment in a Quantum Fabrication Lab at NYU includes a first-of-its-kind agreement to give the city seats on the board and a share of the revenue from the lab — all while making our city the quantum capital of the world.

We’re creating a new national model for economic development that gives working people a say and a stake.

Trump’s core 2024 promise was bringing down costs by being the energy president — “when you bring down energy costs, everything else falls.” The story of 2026 is that his energy policy, killing clean energy to make us dependent on oil, gas, and coal, has been a massive failure.

As I've written before, & I"m sure I'll write again, both here & at the mothership Elon is the biggest insider threat. In August 2023 Ronan Farrow reported how Biden's senior natsec treated him as equivalent to a head of state. 1/ (Link in next post).
Last October, Colin Kahl, then the Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy at the Pentagon, sat in a hotel in Paris and prepared to make a call to avert disaster in Ukraine. A staffer handed him an iPhone—in part to avoid inviting an onslaught of late-night texts and colorful emojis on Kahl’s own phone. Kahl had returned to his room, with its heavy drapery and distant view of the Eiffel Tower, after a day of meetings with officials from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. A senior defense official told me that Kahl was surprised by whom he was about to contact: “He was, like, ‘Why am I calling Elon Musk?’ ”

The reason soon became apparent. “Even though Musk is not technically a diplomat or statesman, I felt it was important to treat him as such, given the influence he had on this issue,” Kahl told me. SpaceX, Musk’s space-exploration company, had for months been providing Internet access across Ukraine, allowing the country’s forces to plan attacks and to defend themselves. But, in recent days, the forces had found their connectivity severed as they entered territory contested by Russia. More alarmingly, SpaceX had recently given the Pentagon an ultimatum: if it didn’t assume the cost of providing service in Ukraine, which the company calculated at some four hundred million dollars annually, it would cut off access. “We started to get a little panicked,” the senior defense official, one of four who described the standoff to me, recalled. Musk “could turn it off at any given moment. And that would have real operational impact for the Ukrainians.”

CPI isn't a big deal unless you're one of those rare people who purchases medical care, vehicles, computers/software, or toys. Might also be a problem for people who earn money instead of already having money, but those people should really try having money instead.
By Chris Anstey, Senior Editor

Thanks for joining us today. Here are key takeaways from the September CPI report:
The headline CPI jumped by 0.6% compared with August, as expected by economists, and 3.7% on a year-on-year basis, marking an acceleration from 3.4% the previous month. More than half the monthly increase came from gasoline, which soared 9.1%.
The core CPI, stripping out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month, more than all but 11 of the 73 economists in Bloomberg’s survey had anticipated. The annual rate accelerated to 2.6%, the fastest pace since June. Increases were broad based, including recreation and used vehicles, airfares and medical care.
Outsize gains in some categories pointed to evidence of both the AI effect and impact from tariffs. On a year-on-year basis, computers and software prices saw record increases, at 9.7% and 28.4% respectively. Toys, up an annual 6.6%, jumped the most since 1988.
Inflation continues to wallop workers. Today’s numbers mean real average hourly earnings contracted by 0.7% last month, the most since May. Real earnings have been shrinking for six straight months now, the longest string since the 2021-23 cost-of-living surge.
The odds of an interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve in two weeks soared after the release, with Treasuries plunging, stocks sliding and the dollar rising. Two-year yields were up about 12 basis points as of 9:32 a.m. in New York, the S&P 500 opened down 0.4% and the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index hit its highest since May 2025.

Excerpts from Michael Lewis on DOGE (Guardian article). 1. Gavin Kliger, white nationalist, refused to shake hands with the Black IRS staffer who briefed him on privacy issues. Or pay attention. Kliger now has a defense start-up valued at 1.4B thanks to DOGE. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Phyllis, who loved working for Kathleen and saw falling on hand grenades as part of her job, never told her how this one had felt. She knew Gavin had expressed enthusiasm for white nationalists, and he likely knew that she knew. She tried to break the ice by walking in with her hand extended; Gavin stared at it and declined to shake it, though he had shaken the hands of the white men who had offered them. “He was kind of cool towards me,” said Phyllis. Before she could even start the briefing, he said, You know, I’ve heard these rules before at other agencies. Yes, she said, but these rules are different, because no other agency is governed by this privacy law, and this law can get you thrown in jail very quickly. As she walked him through the basics – how you can’t use your personal phone for business, how if you happen to so much as glimpse a form 1040 with someone’s name on it you must avert your eyes – Gavin played on his phone. “He’s multitasking right in front of me, typing and texting,” said Phyllis. “It was, here’s a routine that I must endure.”

WOW. Kristi Noem and Elon Musk, among others, "chose to turn the power of the federal government against a singular employee with an impeccable record of public service. ... The attacks against Ms. Comans were based entirely on false information" and many officials "knew [they] were untrue."
In conducting this hearing, the Court is not called upon to resolve factual disputes between
the parties. The facts set forth in this Memorandum Opinion and Order were proposed by the
Plaintiff, unobjected to by the Government, and then deemed admitted by the Court. Dkts. 74, 75,
77.2 These facts establish that high-ranking government officials, including then Secretary of DHS
Kristi Noem and Elon Musk, engaged in a coordinated public relations campaign to impugn the
personal and professional integrity of Ms. Comans. For reasons unfathomable to this Court,
officials chose to turn the power of the federal government against a singular employee with an
impeccable record of public service. In short, Ms. Comans was professionally targeted and
personally attacked by government officials for no legitimate reason. The attacks against Ms.
Comans were based entirely on false information, and many government officials knew the
accusations were untrue at the time they were made. With no regard for the truth and with no
consideration for the personal and professional effect on Ms. Comans, government officials
exploited their access to mass media outlets to broadcast false information. These false
statements reached hundreds of millions of people. The purpose of this Order is, to the best of
this Court’s ability, to correct the public record and establish as a matter of law that the
statements made by these officials about Ms. Comans were objectively and demonstrably false.

Here's the most Musk-focused passage in this opinion...
SCREENSHOT OF JUDGE'S ORDER on 10/13 -- vi. February 11, 2025, Statement by Elon Musk---- On February 11, 2025, Elon Musk, a Special Government Employee and head of DOGE, retweeted on X a photo of Ms. Comans along with the statement, “FEMA CFO Mary Comans was just fired for funneling $58M to illegal migrant hotels in Manhattan” and he called it a “criminal action.” The Government concedes and the Court finds that other than the fact that Ms. Comans had been fired, the post by Mr. Musk was entirely false. The Government further concedes and the Court further findsthat Mr. Musk and officials at FEMA and DHS knew this information was false at the time it was posted. Based on the unchallenged facts and the fact that Mr. Musk was the head of DOGE, he knew or should have known that any payments made to state or local governments through a FEMA grant in February 2025 were approved by his subordinates. Finally, the fact that Mr. Musk posted a picture of Ms. Comans to his millions of followers while falsely characterizing her government service as a “criminal action” was clearly intended to make her afraid. Posting Ms. Comans’ picture served no legitimate governmental interest and was little more than state sanctioned intimidation....

In early 2025, Ms. Comans was directed *by DOGE employees themselves* to continue payments to local governments for sheltering migrants. She followed those orders. Then other DOGE employees found out, and the Trump admin decided to blame her personally and smear her in public for the payments.
early point of confusion was whether the Executive Order required a pause in funding only to nongovernmental organizations or whether it also paused funding to state and local governments. This
was not a decision to be made by the CFO. In fact, as CFO, Ms. Comans had neither the authority
nor the ability to direct money to or away from a particular grant recipient. Defining the scope of
the Executive Order was left to senior DHS or FEMA leadership, their general counsels, or at the
very least other FEMA employees who had direct authority over the grant programs at issue.
Ultimately, the agency’s decision was that payments should continue to state and local
governments. This decision was explicitly approved by employees of the newly
created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) who were embedded with DHS
and were reviewing and approving all funding initiatives. As a result of DOGE’s approval, Ms.
Comans was directed to continue payments to state and local governments.
Thereafter, other DOGE employees embedded with the Department of Treasury claimed
FEMA’s payments to state and local governments violated the President’s Executive Order. What
followed was a series of finger pointing and backtracking that resulted in the decision to blame
Ms. Comans and three other career officials. On February 11, 2025, Ms. Comans was fired and
DHS and DOGE officials began their public campaign to use her as a scapegoat.

The question, one executive told me Monday, is: “Do I let these guys on my cap table now in the event something random comes up and I need Trump universe aligned? Or does that hurt me later if Dems take back power?”
