Rather than a damaging knee-jerk response, what we need is a long term plan for scaling down heat pump subsidies. It could look like this - a gradual reduction in subsidies until the mid-2030s. NB! This only works with other key policies, especially a lower electricity-gas price ratio
Chart showing a scenario for whole life costs of heat pumps and gas boilers. Subsidies fall graudally, from £7,500 in 2026 to £0 by 2034.
The whole life cost of a heat pump stays below that of a gas boiler throughout, with cheaper electricity and falling upfront costs offsetting the drop in subsidy over time

Cop31 host urges wealthy countries to spend ‘much more’ on climate than defence
‘The climate issue is the security issue,’ says Turkish minister at Pacific pre-Cop summit in Fiji Wealthy countries should spend far more on dealing with the climate crisis than the 5% of GDP promised by Nato members for defence because “the climate issue is the security issue”, the host of the next UN summit has said. But, in comments that are likely to prove contentious, the Cop31 president-designate, Murat Kurum, hedged on whether the world’s countries should try to repeat a previous agreement to “transition away from fossil fuels” – the primary cause of the climate crisis – when they meet in Turkey next month. Kurum, the Turkish climate change minister, told the Guardian the world was “already in a transition” and suggested fossil fuel use could be addressed indirectly through other steps. My reflections this morning, some thoughts on how we build back better from here, and a message to members and constituents. 💚🙏
Sian Berry
Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion
This morning, in what I know is a very initial and uncomprehensive way, I want to offer some of my personal reflections and thoughts on what we do now, in the wake of both conference, last night's by-election, and following the many powerful and heartfelt messages I have received from residents, constituents and party members in recent days.
I am full of regret for so much that has happened, and very sad Zack is not joining me in Parliament next week. Sincere congratulations to Sagal on winning her seat too.
On the motion, I voted and argued against it because I felt it needed serious amendment, and if not then sending back for more dialogue or voting down. But the clash of conference with an exciting and mobilising by-election campaign meant many of us were persuaded not to campaign publicly for these ends, while proposers were very organised and remained intent upon no changes at all.
I want to take my full share of personal responsibility for the result of all this in the votes at conference. I should have worked harder to persuade more of our leading figures to speak up in a unified way to say that the motion as written was clearly not reflective of our values and policy principles.
Both in the words of the motion and in how they have been heard in the country, I can hear genuine worry about what it means for our communities, and can see genuine damage being done to our strong reputation as a leading, principled and inclusive voice for human rights in Palestine and against the atrocities of the Israeli state.
I regret this hugely, and apologise to members and constituents for where we are now as a party, which I know is causing real concern. To Green Party members - especially those for whom thoughts of leaving must have crossed their minds in recent days - I say please stay and let us fix this together.
I am very glad that Zack has now said that he would have voted against the motion as it stood, and that he has agreed we have work now to do. We are not at all where we want to be today, but I know we can build from this starting point if we work together in a new spirit.
I stand ready to work with all my colleagues to restore trust in our processes and our party, fix the serious flaws in the motion that was passed, as well as to restore key policies aimed at inclusive peace-building.
And my principles dictate that I will always want to help find a way to do this work through understanding, listening and consensus building.
To my constituents, I want to reassure you this morning that the party's currently stated policy on this issue does not reflect my values, and that it will make no difference to the inclusive way in which I represent our fantastic, diverse, kind and inclusive community here in Brighton.
With love and respect to all, I look forward to important conversations taking place in the coming days and weeks to find a way to make sure our party is again a unified, enthusiastic and very clear voice for understanding, peace and human rights for all people.

A rather sad announcement from @anandmenon.bsky.social on the future of UK in a Changing Europe. ukandeu.ac.uk/announcement...
UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE) was founded 12 years ago. We hired our first member of staff on the day of the 2015 election, the outcome of which guaranteed that there would be a referendum on EU membership. The subsequent period has been tumultuous, yet, throughout it all, we have done our utmost to be a source of impartial, research-based analysis.
We were initially supported by the Economic and Social Science Research Council (ESRC), who generously funded the organisation for over a decade. Their foresight in recognising the need to bring social science to the attention of external audiences in this area was impressive.
Our ESRC funding ended in April 2025. Since that time, we have kept going courtesy of the generosity of King’s College London and donations from numerous other sources including the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Amazon Web Services and the Spanish Government. I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to the organisation’s longevity.
Sadly, it is now time to bring down the curtain on this act. UKICE will cease to operate at the end of this year. This is – for us at least – a sad occasion. However, we will soon be able to inform you of the exciting ways in which our work – blogs, reports, lunchtime seminars and more – will continue. The website, containing its rich treasure trove of blogs, reports, videos and the Brexit Witness Archive will, of course, remain accessible thanks to the generosity of the Policy Institute at King’s College London.
I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last decade and of the way we have assessed the Brexit process, the development of the United Kingdom since 2016 and the evolution of UK-EU relations. UKICE has attempted to bridge the gap between social scientists and what some people call the ‘real world’. We have shown a new way of doing social science – engaging, accessible and impartial. While it would be too much to claim to have shaped the debate, I g…
