New, from me: Once memory-holed, DOGE is now the subject of revisionism. To better understand why DOGE failed, I talked to people in the civic tech movement that DOGE displaced, who continue to offer the alternative model for how to modernize govt. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-vs-ci...

I actually think a tech office with procurement oversight would be good b/c there is a lot of real waste. But a) if you are just rotating in people with no govt experience, you are just going to have bros asking AI to search for "waste" & b) these guys assume it won't affect their govt contracts

And this is why, when folks hijack conversations about AI safety to talk about the rise of the [benevolent|terrible] machine God, we should tell them to go play outside while the grownups are talking. Because the actual conversation is about the harms humans do, not about fictitious nonsense.

concerning stuff happening right now at USWDS: -removing open-source contributors, -losing institutional knowledge, -departing from principles, -security risks through an “agentic-first” approach, and -making changes without sufficient human accessibility and usability testing.

USWDS was created and maintained by people who genuinely care about making government websites work as well as possible for as many people as possible. It was an amazing thing to watch on its own. But then to see the adoption and contribution by teams all over the world - that was incredible.

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

Virginia Gov. Spanberger has returned the proposed budget to the legislature with amendments, one of which would create a Virginia digital service! This would save the state vastly more than the budgeted $5 million. It will be a Big Deal if legislature passes this. www.wric.com/wp-content/u...
Finally, to enhance state agency operations and provide more user-friendly services for Virginians, the Commonwealth must fix persistent, long-unresolved technical challenges and address systemic barriers to service delivery. As such, I am proposing start-up funding for a digital services team that will provide this support to our state agencies.
