To paint a picture of just how substantial these expenditures have grown: In the first quarter of 2026, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft reported spending $130.65 billion in capital expenditures for data centers—71 percent higher than what they spent during the same quarter of 2025.

These four companies anticipate spending approximately $700 billion this year." Morgan Stanley analysts project that combined, Big Tech companies will spend nearly $3 trillion through 2028, but only generate half of that amount in cash."?

To finance this buildout, tech companies are taking on an increased amount of debt: in 2025, big tech firms issued $121 billion in new debt, but this number is anticipated to balloon in the years to come: Morgan Stanley is estimating debt issuance will top S500 billion this year. I love the clarity in this interview. Companies think they have a loophole for violating existing law because they have cooked up novel liability-laundering narratives founded on readily-disproven myths about what the technology is. An audit would find a gas-fired digital redlining machine.

This comes from my time at the CFPB. The powerful people need to obey the laws that already exist. That was the whole crypto situation. I believe crypto is a security. I believe it should have had to follow all of the securities laws that the SEC enforces.
It’s similar with Big Tech. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act already says that you can’t discriminate based on protected characteristics, and we know that a lot of these algorithms — Facebook, or you name it — are doing that, and it’s already illegal. So why don’t we just enforce the laws we already have against these entities?
I really don’t think that we need to reinvent the wheel. I think the playbook that we’ve seen from tech over and over again is we’re different, we’re special. I think we can do a lot if we just start to have leaders that reject this very arrogant argument that tech keeps making over and over again.
