Still pondering whether that was the dumbest end to a Washington football game after so many dumb endings. Was it worse than Gibbs’ 2 timeouts? McNabb thinking there was a double OT? Unsure. But very very dumb

He warned of the ills of socialism “the government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.” …..as he gives contracts to his former (current?) company, taking from somebody else.

Democrats must recon with the idea that, guided by ideology and in exchange for massive profits from government contracts, many of these tech companies were *fine* assisting with the erosion of democracy and civil/human rights violations en mass.

New, from me: Once memory-holed, DOGE is now the subject of revisionism. To better understand why DOGE failed, I talked to people in the civic tech movement that DOGE displaced, who continue to offer the alternative model for how to modernize govt. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-vs-ci...

🚨New: With data added from more states, we now estimate that about 2 million fewer kids are receiving SNAP in the wake of deep cuts enacted in last year’s Republican reconciliation law. Overall, more than 5 million people have lost SNAP since July 2025. www.cbpp.org/research/foo...

I actually think a tech office with procurement oversight would be good b/c there is a lot of real waste. But a) if you are just rotating in people with no govt experience, you are just going to have bros asking AI to search for "waste" & b) these guys assume it won't affect their govt contracts

And this is why, when folks hijack conversations about AI safety to talk about the rise of the [benevolent|terrible] machine God, we should tell them to go play outside while the grownups are talking. Because the actual conversation is about the harms humans do, not about fictitious nonsense.

concerning stuff happening right now at USWDS: -removing open-source contributors, -losing institutional knowledge, -departing from principles, -security risks through an “agentic-first” approach, and -making changes without sufficient human accessibility and usability testing.

USWDS was created and maintained by people who genuinely care about making government websites work as well as possible for as many people as possible. It was an amazing thing to watch on its own. But then to see the adoption and contribution by teams all over the world - that was incredible.

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

VA sole sourced it to Cerner in 2017 because (paraphrasing): “Procurement takes too long” “DOD is going to use Cerner” “VA is for people that used to serve at DOD” and thus “Cerner should magically work at the VA” Shockingly - the VA is different than the DOD. $28B different, apparently.
