Cats, bikes, urban policy and evidence-based policy generally, environment, books, quilts, and lots of randomness. GenX. Canada. Let's try not to make things worse, shall we?

I hope whatever civil engineering firm lands this RFP is haunted at night by visions of the cyclists they'll be killing. I hope their iron ring they were given at graduation when they took an oath to the public starts to itch and weigh on their finger like an anchor.
What is certain, however, is that a vast sum of our money will be wasted, countless Torontonians will find themselves profoundly inconvenienced for extended periods, and, eventually, a cyclist will get struck by a car. But at least the congestion will be worse.

Over the weekend, the Bradford campaign challenged the media to do this "scavenger hunt" to uncover supposed places where Olivia Chow frittered away the provincial New Deal money. Challenge accepted. From my newsletter this week, here’s what I found.
An infographic for a City Hall scavenger hunt titled 'Where did the Money Go?' showing eight locations throughout Toronto where city budget expenditures are hidden, with clues and dollar amounts for each stop, ending at the Mayor's Office, and promoting Brad Bradford's mayoral campaign.

An elderly lady (in her nineties she told me) sat at the next table in a cafe. Her daughter called her, presumably to see if she needed any shopping. No, she said. "I have gin, chocolate, and a new book to read when I get home." Habits are important. Hold onto them.

I can tell you why: 1. Toronto doesn’t have secondary routes that don’t meander insanely and that don’t have stops every block. 2. The places I’m going ARE ON THE MAIN STREETS. THAT’S WHY THOSE STREETS ARE MAIN.

The answer (to the headline) is no. Not when ebikes replace car trips, which they are more likely to do than regular bike trips. And research by @trecpdx.bsky.social and others has shown that ebike riders will ride more often and/or farther than regular bikes, making up for some or all lost effort.

I find this so infuriating for a couple of reasons. First is that for adults, e-bikes are often car replacements! Second is that e-bikes are about *mobility* and it shouldn't matter what level of exertion someone has, even if they're riding recreationally. There's so much ableism in this POV.
