Cats, bikes, urban policy and evidence-based policy generally, environment, books, quilts, and lots of randomness. GenX. Canada. Let's try not to make things worse, shall we?

If anyone outside Canada has ever wondered why most of the population lives in the southern bit, it’s because the northern bit often looks like this. Roads: ha ha, the Canadian Shield laughs at you

Fixed that for ya. If you live at Palmerston and College why on earth would you own a car at all? You can get a taxi within seconds. Or streetcar. Or bike. Or, as they say, walk.
Text from a newspaper real estate article reading in part “We don’t need a three-car garage in a place where we walk everywhere.” The words “three-car” are crossed out.

Even scammers forget about GenX, apparently (from this weekend’s Globe feature)
Screenshot of text from a newspaper article, which reads: Scammers tailor their approaches based on the victims' age demographics, said Larry Zelvin, head of security advisory at Bank of Montreal. Baby boomers, for instance, are often targeted by fraudsters impersonating their grandchildren, a bank employee, or a potential romantic partners, while millenials are more likely to encounter fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes, said Mr. Zelvin. People in Gen Z, meanwhile, are most likely to be targeted with fake job or concert ticket scams.

#PedalPoll 2026! 243 bikes, I'd say 3/4 eastbound? The pedestrians were about even. Neither bike numbers nor pedestrian numbers are anywhere close to as minimal as the city estimates.
Pedal Poll screenshot of 2 hours of counting everything but cars. 188 bikes, 29 ebikes, 18 Bixi bikes, 8 cargo bikes, 7 e-scooters, 450 pedestrians, 1 Segway, and 5 of those motorcycle things pretending to be ebikes. Total 706.

It's lovely that they changed the Google Workspace icons so they're not identical rainbow squiggles, but um. Now I can't tell Chat from Sheets.
Icons in a browser. Both the Google Chat icon and the Sheets icon are subtly different green blobs with a white squiggle at the bottom.

Bike parking grades: Stockyards Beer Store gets a C+, a gentleman’s pass. Proper ring properly secured to the ground, usable but much too close to the wall; my right pannier was obstructed. And only one bike can use each of the two available posts. Another 50cm from the wall would get an A.

Hello #birdsky, what in the heck are these very long-beaked birds I'm seeing on the Swedish Moose Migration? They hang out in the field setting. Brownish. SUPER LONG BEAK. I'm hoping it's obvious what they are? I don't know birds at all but I love these guys.
Screenshot from the Swedish Moose Migration: Two birds in a windswept brown field. It's hard to tell how large they might be. They're brown, with some mottled colouration? They have HUGELY LONG and pointy beaks, maybe half again the length of their bodies. It's unclear how long their legs are because they're standing/sitting in a bumpy grass field.Screenshot from the Swedish Moose Migration: Closer-up view of a bird in a windswept brown field. I read about 10% less in 2025 than I usually do (it came to about 27,000 pages) but I spent more time playing computer games for sure. Here are my 5-star reads of 2025.

I keep a photo of this Calvin and Hobbes strip on my phone as reassurance it's not just me.
A four-panel strip from Calvin & Hobbes. The parents are in bed (after their house has been broken into). First panel - Mom: "Are you still awake, too?" Dad: "Mm-hmm. I was thinking." Second panel, Dad continues, "It's funny. When I was a kid, I thought grown-ups never worried about anything. I trusted my parents to take care of everything, and it never occurred to me that they might not know how." Third panel, Dad continues, "I figured that once you grew up, you automatically knew what to do in any given scenario". Fourth panel, Dad continues, "I don't think I'd have been in such a hurry to reach adulthood if I'd known the whole thing was going to be ad-libbed".

A tale of two headlines. CityNews: active tense, there's a driver involved ("struck dead by driver") -- kudos for reporting this way. CP: passive ("being hit by vehicle"), vehicle apparently acting on its own. Driver escapes mention, let alone responsibility, yet again.

I keep this Pratchett bit on my phone because it was so unexpected and I laugh every single time I read it. So much talent to set it up.

I do love the Ask a Manager open threads sometimes
Question in a discussion thread asks whether lycanthropy would be covered under the ADA. Another person asks whether it's a medical condition or a curse, and notes that if it's medical, it's probably covered under the ADA, but if it's a curse you're probably looking for some kind of religious exemption.

Throw the subway in there for an even more dramatic picture of how Bloor works
Image from the City bike-lane study showing the Bloor subway carries 81% of total Bloor corridor volume. Of the street volume, 88% is cars, 12% pedestrians, and a smidge cyclists (I dispute those numbers based on other counts we've done, but never mind, the subway is the main thing).

Sentence of the day, from Le Comte de Monte Cristo, written in 1846 and yet oh so relevant
