Lucy Maloney @lucymaloney.bsky.social · 1h
Vancouver election day is this Saturday 17 October. If you want affordable, accessible housing choices in every neighbourhood, vote for the entire @onecityvan.bsky.social slate.
OneCity’s Lucy Maloney told The Tyee she was unhappy that council was unable to pass the Social Housing Initiative — the staff proposal to allow 20-storey social housing buildings — and the Villages Plan.

“I’m particularly disappointed about the Villages Plan falling over, because part of OneCity’s vision for the city is more affordable and accessible housing choices in every neighbourhood — particularly low-rise. There’s been surveys showing that a high percentage of Vancouverites want low-rise apartment buildings, yet they’re illegal in 70 per cent of our city. The Villages Plan would’ve gone some way towards addressing that, so that’s disappointing.”

She was an exceptional reporter, curious scientist, and all-around wonderful person. I cannot begin to describe the magnitude of this loss for science, public health, and global understanding of disease. We'll miss you enormously, Helen.

I worked with—and deeply admired—Helen for almost 30 years. She was hands down *the best source* about emerging infectious diseases that I've ever known. My first warning of COVID was when on Dec 28, 2019 she reposted a ProMED mail report of an atypical pneumonia cluster: "This doesn't look good."

Voting is a chess move, not a valentine! I also voted today, for a mayor I’m not thrilled about but who I think is better than the other options that have a chance, and five city councillors I’m excited about and five others I have reservations about, but I think they have more good ideas than bad.

I don’t really care what is in people’s hearts. I care about what they say and what they do. I want to make homophobia and transphobia so shameful and taboo that bigots dare not express or act on it for fear of dire social and professional consequences.

This is a tough election for pro-housing voters—we don't even have 10 good council candidates, let alone a solid mayor choice. But here's what I can say: please do NOT vote for Stephanie Smith (Green). She consistently opposes the pro-housing movement and will only set the city back.

Since mask discourse is trending again, I thought I'd re-up this. Respirators remain a vital tool for people who need extra protection from respiratory viruses. Masks work! But there are good scientific reasons why population masking as an intervention was a good idea in 2020, but not in 2026.

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

I urge everyone to vote OneCity across the board, but especially for School Board. No other party has put forward a slate this experienced. VSB schools have seen brutal cuts in services and an apalling lack of open engagement at the board level. Schools, teachers and our kids deserve better.

I’m very disappointed in this outcome, but also I have no doubt that Fry would be a better mayor than Sim. I voted for Kennedy Stewart four years ago because I thought uninspired and ineffective was better than actively harmful. I had hoped for better this year, but I’m still voting to reduce harm.
