Nikole Hannah-Jones’s story has been a compelling one to follow, and as a Black parent and an educator, I am simultaneously moved and disappointed. Hannah-Jones writes about race and power, but she devotes much of her article to individual shortcomings to systemic issues.

I think the one exception to this is colleges. As @mtsw.bsky.social has noted, for many Americans college is the one and only time in their life when they live in a dense walkable setting.

Did you know that from tomorrow, Qualtrics is offering synthetic panels (AI-generated participants)? Follow me down a rabbit hole I'm calling "doing science is tough and I'm so busy, can't we just make up participants?"
Text reads: About synthetic panels
Recruiting the right participants for a study can be difficult. You may not get the exact demographics you need, and the shorter the deadline, the less sure you can be that everyone will answer on time. One possible solution can be to use synthetic panels.

Synthetic panels are powered by a first party proprietary AI model developed here at Qualtrics. Our synthetic panel is trained on thousands of responses from a variety of demographic backgrounds in order to more accurately predict how certain populations would respond to a survey.

Our synthetic panel is based on the United States General Population, and is only available in English. This panel comes with ready-made quotas and target breakouts in order to represent your chosen population and make it easy to launch your survey right away.Text reads:
Question-writing best practices
To get the most reliable and actionable results from synthetic audiences, consider these question-writing best practices:

Ask forward-looking and attitudinal questions.
Synthetic panels perform best with perceptions, preferences, and intent-based questions. For example, “How likely are you to try…?”
Synthetic panels are less applicable for studies on past behaviors, detailed recall, brand recall, or awareness questions. For example, “When did you last visit…?”Text reads:
Discussion
The current study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of the TPB when applied to health behaviours which addressed the limitations of previous reviews by including only prospective tests of behaviour, applying RE meta-analytic procedures, correcting correlations for sampling and measurement error, and hierarchically analysing the effect of behaviour type and sample and methodological moderators. Some 237 tests were identified which examined relations amongst model components. Overall the analysis indicated that the TPB could explain 19.3% of the variance in behaviour and 44.3% of the variance in intention across studies. This level of prediction of behaviour is slightly lower than that of previous meta-analytic reviews which have found between 27% (Armitage & Conner, 2001; Hagger et al., 2002) and 36% (Trafimow et al., 2002)
of the variance in behaviour to be explained by intention and PBC.

My wife, a former journalist, has no idea who Olivia Nuzzi is. And none the rest of my family has any clue. There is a massive overestimation by elite media that people somehow know about or want to know about Olivia Nuzzi. It is not shocking that her book has sold 1,200 copies.

One theory I have is that competence, self-control, responsibility, and expertise have all been feminized, leaving “masculinity” with the realm of impulsivity and petulance. So the divide is not really between “femininity” and “masculinity” so much as between adulthood and childishness.

one reason the framing as "AI" is so bad is that it makes people think "interact with this like a person" when in fact the only way to make it remotely useful is "interact with it like an extremely powerful but extremely weird user interface"

Yes where else could men possibly receive this scorching insight
And the “provide” element he couches largely in economic terms. “I tell my sons, when you’re in the company of women, you pay for everything. And if you can’t, you don’t go out … A woman is not going to have sex with a man who splits the bill with her.” Signalling resource is one of the three things women find most attractive, according to another of his maxims, along with kindness and intellect. He admits his sons tell him this is a boomer view of modern dating, but “I try to go where the data takes me,” he says. “Research shows that society, and men themselves, are really hard on men when they’re not economically viable.”

AI has some legit uses and can be a decent research tool. But you can't rely on it to do more than you understand, and if you ask it to do everything, it will get a lot wrong. The biggest paradox of AI is that those who get the most out of it are experts in an area.

y'know, if tech companies weren't so fired up to call every single thing "AI" it would be a lot easier to distinguish "ML spam filter that is well-sandboxed and tuned on your emails" from "giant context and IP-eroding foundation model that makes people paranoid and unhappy"

Very few narratives piss me off as much as the whole "let's give marginalised people LLM assistants for inclusion".

Inclusion does not mean giving marginalised people shittier versions of a thing: Sure you can give kids from poorer backgrounds an LLM to "learn" but what you are saying is that poor people are not worth having trustworthy sources of information. When you say that older or lonely people can talk to chatbots to feel less alone you are saying that some people are not worth a social life.

This is a deeply inhumane perspective that goes actively against the ideas and ideals of inclusion.
