Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I was interviewing a health researcher for a profile and she kept asking me why I wasn't using AI to write it. I responded that it was an environmental scourge, and that I was actually a writer who could write. The experience was profoundly demoralizing.

This is so genuinely cruel and heartless. Ford is, among other things, just a bad person.
Aware that the premier gives out his cellphone number freely, DiBernardo decided to get in touch. On Sept. 7, he sent Ford the following text:

Hello, I just saw the news in the Toronto Star that proposals from the city to retain the bike lanes and reduce traffic congestion were rejected without due consideration. A close friend of mine died in a cycling accident north of Bloor on university [sic] in an area where bike lanes were removed due to construction. This political move is going to cost Canadian lives at a time when we need to be more united than ever before. Please reconsider. He didn’t expect to hear back. He only wanted to register opposition to a plan that will needlessly endanger lives (not to mention one that will have almost no impact on traffic, as an engineering report commissioned by Ford’s own government indicates). “I spoke from the heart,” DiBernardo told me. “And I almost immediately got a response.”

The response he got (verified by the Star): “I am sorry for your loss! Star is always truthful lmao! I have been talking to the Mayor last week about University!”

Doug Ford is laughing his ass off. His words, not mine.

The premier of Ontario is four weeks away from the end of his 21-week summer vacation. He is 11 weeks away from the beginning of his 10-week winter vacation. He is three and a half years away from the next provincial election. And while there may be bumps in the road ahead, God help him, at least there won’t be so many bike lanes: not after he spends an estimated $48 million ripping 19 kilometres’ worth of them out of three Toronto streets, ostensibly to ease traffic congestion.

His plan has attracted some naysayers. Michael DiBernardo, who lives in East York, is one. He believes Ford has a tendency to spend big money “for very transparent, very stupid reasons,” and he takes issue with the premier’s refusal to entertain compromises the city has proposed to restore car lanes to Bloor Street, University Avenue and Yonge Street but keep bike lanes in place.

I'm thinking about the family reunion I attended, held at an Eastern Ontario church hall. There was a distant cousin there, who'd been some sort of Republican senator, spouting off about his pre-Vatican II faith. It was like seeing an altogether different kind of Catholic that I didn't know existed.
