Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

Gods, the Internet was such a miracle in the 90s. What do you mean I can load Ask Jeeves on a Netscape browser, and the Encyclopedia Britannica would just be there? Each new x86 or modem was a tangible step forward. It all felt like magic. The garbage today does not.

Silicon Valley wasn't solely a shell game until the tech media started calling idiots like Musk and Zuckerman geniuses, two guys who notoriously didn't create shit. But they didn't know that because they were idiots too who shouldn't have been reporting on things they didn't understand.

Exactly. This is such a lie. Email had a purpose. The internet had a purpose. Search had a purpose. Everybody loved Silicon Valley in the 90s because they made shit that did what it promised. Now 3 guys who never made SHIT have ALL the money in SV. They're scam artists. Not engineers.

for a certain type of voter, after all. I think once you get to the people who actually work in politics even the ignorance has to go away. That’s where you get the Rand Paul types, who actually seem to believe some of what they profess, and I have to wonder how they see their alleged fellows

4 October marks the 30th anniversary for the start of the adaptation of Those Who Hunt Elves. Or you could argue that *conceptually* the anniversary fell yesterday, since I gather the show aired at 25:15 (1.15 AM). Which's the significance of the anniversary: the start of modern late-night anime.

Here’s a sample of the translation, it’s a great piece.
"Everywhere I looked, I saw companies that shouldn't exist. Companies built around misleading their customers, saying Al could do all sorts of things it couldn't do. And I hate people getting rich by conning people."
Zitron vented his incendiary monologues on
¡HeartRadio, America's largest radio publisher.
"The people at the radio company told me to lean into who I am. It helped me grow as a person."
It also spread his disgust and contempt for Silicon Valley. In Zitron's view, tech executives are trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes: claiming that Al will acquire godlike powers and pose a threat, while insisting that development must move so quickly that nobody has time to think. That, according to Zitron, is "the oldest trick in the con artist's book." In a recent podcast episode, he told Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to shut up twelve times.
"That was fun. I'm proud of that episode," he says with a smile. But somewhere along the way, he has also grown into a new role - that of a serious commentator. And he is careful to point out that there are reasons for his anger. Focusing on the anger, he says, is a way of sidestepping the real issue.
"It's easier to see an angry man than to deal with a complex, uncomfortable truth."
His answers come quickly. Talking to him is both entertaining and mildly dizzying. Zitron is engaged, articulate and full of metaphors. He also mixes categorical pronouncements — such as the claim that Al almost exclusively makes people stupider - with a barrage of hard data.
For example, he points to OpenAl and Anthropic's spending, which is set to rise next year as computing capacity they have ordered becomes ready to come online. Claims like this, along with his reporting that hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs are sitting unused in warehouses, have led outlets including the Financial Times to quote directly from Zitron's blog, Where's Your Ed At.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

Yeah, it felt like they could only show one line at a time, so whenever a name had to be subtitled, the actual dialogue line would disappear. This led to entire lines that were just not subbed, was really bad

I dunno if you've seen the new Apothecary Diaries episode, but the subs were absolutely terrible. Aside from all this, they were mistimed on several lines and I think a line or two was outright missing.

These new OOONA subs are not as catastrophically bad as the fully Netflix-compatible subs Crunchyroll was serving to users a year ago, but they still represent a significant downgrade in especially typesetting quality. Numpad notation positioning only, with no colors used. Plus issues like this too.

Remember when Crunchyroll tried to make their subtitles significantly worse a year ago? They backtracked on it at the time, but I suspected they were just delaying their plans to shift from Aegisub to OOONA, and sadly, it seems I was right: Crunchyroll is actively pushing OOONA subs to users now.

Netflix is so rigid, it makes some things impossible, and I genuinely don't know how they expect people to do what they're asking. They want subtitles strictly timed to shot changes, but if the shot with the Forced Narrative is less than 24 frames, you have do do insane juggling.

So often these platforms also have strict timing rules, too. Like, usually they have to be on screen for a full second (24 frames). Some of the quickest I've seen has been 20 frames. In an example like this one, that would be literally impossible.

Here's a fun story from when we were preparing a show for a now kinda-sorta-but-not-really defunct VOD channel. The reps insisted on SRT subs which were bottom-center only. We begged to let us do burn-ins. Back & forth ensured. Finally, I sent them this example. They quickly said YIKES, and agreed.

...with rare exceptions for "force narratives" (sign translations) that can sometimes be moved top-center, so long as they don't overlap the thing it's translating. And never can the FNs be onscreen at the same time as a subtitle.

I'd never seen this Roy Lichtenstein painting before, but it's incredible how he manages unfailingly to make his copies worse than the original comics he's ripping off.
A drab pop art painting of a sinister man driving a car, watching a stoic blonde in leopard print fur. The proportions of the guy's face are offThe original image, from Girls' Romances 78 by Tony Abruzzo. The guy has a more sinister leer, while the woman has heavier mascara and feels both sadder and more determined. A caption reads "I vowed to myself I would NOT miss my appointment -- that I would NOT go riding with him--yet before I knew it..."
