i read Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, which made me think about semiotics. and when i think about semiotics, naturally, i think about Nancy

a comic that adapts a chapter of Invisible Cities in the style of a Nancy comic.

it is titled "Invisible Nancies", "after Bushmiller & Calvino", and covers "Cities & Signs 4".

Nancy walks into a candy shop in the city of Hypatia.

Nancy is confused, seeing only a sleeping dog inside the shop.

she says "I feel cheated--I'm going to talk to the mayor", walking to the city hall.

she reacts in shock as she only finds a convict in a cell behind the mayor's desk.

Nancy says "something's up--maybe the librarian knows what", walking to the library.

in the library, she finds Sluggo eating an ice-cream cone. she asks him "where's the librarian?" to which he replies "out there", pointing to a playground outside.

the librarian, sitting in the playground, tells Nancy "signs form a language, but not the one you think you know"

Nancy says "I think I'm getting it" while heading to a barn

Stepping out of the barn holding some candy, Nancy says "I could go for some music"

Nancy enjoys music coming from a mausoleum in a cemetery while sitting on a gravestone.

She walks away, saying "now I need to hitch a ride out of here--I know just the place"

Maxime sent in these incredible photos of a 1/220 Jaguar II Zwei resin kit they purchased from us. These small scale garage kits based on Kazuhisa Kondoh's original Gundam designs have tons of detail and look fantastic, but it's rare to see them built. Great to see such a nicely finished kit!

i drew this on a whim after seeing a photo of a cat grabbing a beer and hearing that they can drink saltwater, but i don't actually think they'd like it that much. so this cat is like one of those guys who drinks torturously spicy things all for recreation

a comic entitled "cat beer", featuring a fantasy-style humanoid cat and a more regular human.

the cat offers a drink and says "here, try this swill."

the human drinks and says "ugh! so salty! 'swill' is right. I can't stand it" to which the cat responds "pussy!"

the human says "that's rich coming from you." cat says "it just has some flavor is all."

the last panel has a fairy pointing to an informative plaque, that reads "Did you know? Cats have kidneys that are good at filtering out salt, so they can drink seawater without getting dehydrated. It's not like it's good for them, but they can handle it."

i love lettering in comics. nice lettering really elevates a comic. honestly, when i draft up my own comics, the stage i feel the most happy at is when i've put in all the dialogue into empty panels: there's enough structure to make it feel real, but infinite possibility for the art to be great

recently I've began playing with making Turing-pattern-style images in photoshop. it's fun to see things distort and expand outward. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this in designs because it's pretty simple to achieve
