everybody knows about this song because it's astroturfed. it is well-constructed, but it's not memorable. "i dont hear a single" is the tom petty quote. it just doesn't have that special quality that most no.1s have. I can't put it into words, but I can tell. and chances are you can too

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

At this point, though, if someone contends they've never even heard of
"Choosin' Texas" or Langley, it may say more about the listener than the song.
Or, for that matter, what they want to project to the world. With incessant news coverage alongside chart and playlist presence, it's pretty difficult to still claim total ignorance on this one.
Perhaps there is a deeper reason why people say they haven't heard the song and feel the need to make it known: cultural cachet.
