Sad news via Toy Robot Video's new release of Guyver 2: Dark Hero... Yoshiki Takaya suffered a cerebral infarction, resulting in paralysis to his right side & even some brain damage, which has forced his retirement from drawing manga. Guyver is, for all intents & purposes, officially finished.

Q: Lastly, do you have a message for the fans who have long been waiting for the continuation of the original manga?

Takaya: I suffered a cerebral infarction, and paralysis remains on the right side of my body. There is also damage to my brain, and as a result my concentration and judgment have decline, while my short-term memory has become unreliable. I think about this at least a dozen times a day.

people end up unable to see depiction as anything other than endorsement when their entire cultural diet is escapist fun and reassurance. they see something make them uncomfortable and can only assume people are watching horrible shit as vicarious pleasure and are horrified.

Overall I was surprised by how many of these 120 games use generative AI for music and assets. I had assumed that the vast majority would be for translation and store page images.

The former raises quality control questions and is obviously a disaster for actual humans who are employed to translate games, but it's arguably less egregious compared to machine-made music, textures and narrative.

I saw some people the other day being confused about how anime fans knew about new shows and stuff in the mid 00s. I’ve gone a long time without talking about how I translate game text. I don’t mean within this writeup, I mean ever. I’ve published several videos on the technical side of fan-translation and a big fat zero on the actual art of localization. The reason for this is very simple: I don’t want to deal with social media localization piranhas. There has never been a time more hostile to localizers with the entire industry in chaos over being replaced with AI, uprisings against “wokealizers”, and every possible excuse to raise controversy where it doesn’t exist. How bad is it, you ask? In my recent romhacking video I used a thumbnail with the simplest, most direct translation I could find in the script, specifically so that nobody could complain. The line was:

I’m a 4th-grader at Tomoeda Elementary.

I really want to emphasize that this is a completely direct translation. Any change to it at all would make it worse. But was it good enough for the piranhas? Fuck no! Believe it or not, someone showed up in the replies and tried to argue that the order of the words should be 100% preserved through translation and that it should be the perfectly SOVLfully accurate:

Remember the old 2000s fansub days, when groups would race to get subs out so that they'd be the first and get the most viewers even if it meant tons of preventable errors? Or how some groups would pick a neglected series/genre, produce a slapdash, low-effort TL, then go "It's better than nothing"?

THAT is the problem with "better than nothing". MTPE fan TL is worse than nothing. It's actively detrimental to the games supposedly being translated and the community at large. It makes players associate the game with slop. It forestalls good-faith translations. It wastes everyone's time.
