One of the funniest (sob) things I learned during my time at California YIMBY was that sometimes lawmakers adjudicate differing positions by counting how many studies support each. Also for their purposes, an AER article and a 3D pie chart some nonprofit made were each one (1) study.

Yesterday he woke me up early begging for food. I walk over to his food bowl. Its full and he won't eat it. I pour food back into the bag, put food back into the bowl, he eats. Would anyone like to take him off my hands. He only eats the most expensive prescription diet out there.

Subtext of this report from @colbylsmith.bsky.social & @bencasselman.bsky.social : FOMC is PISSED (No link yet, will post when I have one)
By Colby Smith and Ben Casselman
(New York Times) -- The Federal Reserve has met at least eight times a year for decades. Reducing the number of meetings would represent the biggest change by Kevin M. Warsh since he became chairman.
Kevin M. Warsh is considering reducing the number of regularly scheduled meetings at which the Federal Reserve sets interest rates, a potentially seismic move that would mark the most significant change in how the central bank operates in years.
The Federal Reserve's 12-person policy committee meets eight times a year and votes on whether to lift, lower or hold borrowing costs. Mr. Warsh raised the idea of changing the frequency of those meetings at the Fed's gathering this week, according to four people with knowledge of the discussion who were not authorized the speak publicly.
Mr. Warsh, who was presiding over his second meeting as chairman, left the impression that a revised schedule could be decided on before the next meeting in mid-September, even if the changes would not be carried out until later.
The Fed declined to comment.

DOGE has a very obvious feedback mechanism for its cuts.

If DOGE makes a big, broad cut against a million programs, people get upset about a few specific, very good ones like PEPFAR, and then that program comes back because DOGE's members are, thus, informed it was good.

I can only hope people realizing this won't damage the mechanism, because it's still useful to have professionals getting mad about some very good thing getting cut before it's brought back online as a result.

In a word, DOGE is responsive, which is unusual for the government!

I agree, but it would be more efficient to spend one hour ahead of time talking to experts or just reading up on the history of a program for [disease, student testing, nuclear safety, etc.]

Plus, some programs don't have famous proponents with time to dig into the weeds.

I'm highly sympathetic, but there really are thousands and thousands of programs and grants to cut, so I'm not sure the small team doing the cuts has the ability to go through them all one-by-one on their short timeline.

Maybe a system can be developed to assist with feedback.
