Had my annual eye exam, optometrist is happy everything is still healthy internally but I now need to add an ointment at bedtime for my right eye to go along with the drops during the day - it tends to dry out and it's been worse lately

The illustration shows a conference room with two professional-looking cats sitting at a table. They're having a meeting and looking at a big screen on the wall. Ron is on the screen and he's in the middle of licking his rear end, his leg stuck up in the air. He is staring out at them, looking surprised. Important piece of marine science nuance: when a shark attacks a human, it's almost always an unintentional encounter. Sharks do not think about you, at all. When a whale strikes a ship, it is almost always intentional. They know us. They understand us. And they remember what we did.

This October is...Catober! Every day this month, I'll be posting a Catober comic, introducing a different cat character. Catober Day 1: Annabelle (who's is based on one of my cats.)
A banner at the top that reads, "Thursday, October 1." Below, there's brief poem: "This cat's a lovebug/Her name's Annabelle/But please do not hug her/She considers that hell." The illustration shows a man smiling and hugging his black cat, who looks irritated and is struggling to get away. There's a banner at the bottom that reads, "Catober: 31 days. 31 cats."

new research reports that cats vocalize more when greeting male owners. researchers suggest that this is because cats have apparently learned that men require additional explanation when provided with basic communication. I don't like the idea that cats are judging me this accurately.

Can you #FindThatLizard?! 🦎 Lizards pant to cool themselves off when temperatures get too high! All animals need ways to cool down, lizards included, because they can overheat. Humans sweat, birds bathe or swim, and pigs roll in mud. So it makes sense that lizards would have a cooling strategy.

Took the kayak down the Icelandic river to where it hits Lake Winnipeg. Most of the evening, the sky was quite dull, and then it exploded.
A brilliant red and deep orange sunset streaks across the sky behind the silhouettes of a small clump of trees in the middle of a field. All of this is reflected, almost perfectly in the water in the foreground. Taken from a kayak.

You can hormonally induce oestrus in ewes outside of the natural cycle but it's not 100% efficient. We used to do it with the university flock to get 3 crops of lambs per year (easier for research)

"In the Ancient Hallowed Places" Ovenbird with Six-spotted Tiger Beetle 10"x24" oil painting on panel The beautiful conglomerate rocks of an ancient sea floor; buried and lifted and revealed and eroded, the life that once was and is again, complex and beautiful and interconnected across time. 🪶🐡
A long format oil painting showing a cropped rock formation of ancient conglomerate, cracked and looming in its current form by water, ice, and time. A wash of moss and lichens crawls across the surfaces that allowed it to grow, with stunted mountain laurel taking root in the mossy nursery, and large brownish rock tripe lichens clinging here and there. A few aged white oak leaves sit in the moss, bug eaten and worn, and near the center sits an Ovenbird, the tiny stripy warbler pausing in its day. On the rock closest to us on the right is a metallic green colored Six-spotted tiger beetle. The artist watermark reads: copyright 2026 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth" featherdust dot com

An oil painting of a Brown Creeper, clinging to the curling and craggy bark of an older Yellow Birch tree.
