It seems indisputable that this is fact, and that Burnham has read intelligence service documents that have details. The public question shouldn’t be ‘what effect did it have?’ Because that cant be proved or litigated. It should be ‘why did Putin think Russia’s interests would be served by this?’

If you add in £130m losses on “Reform TV” (aka GB News) the effective subsidy of Farage’s party from just four men tops £200m. You just have to join the dots app.prospectmagazine.co.uk/story/75017/...

That's a great phrase, populism killing the future. And we have to face up to the fact that social media is the fundamental factor driving populism. Because social media - and its influence on traditional media - is the only common feature to all countries where populism is rising.

If you totted up the sums for every financial scandal in British politics (£2k per parliamentary question for cash-for-questions, £200k for Johnson’s No 10 renovation, the cost of that very nice campervan) even with second tier stuff like Rayner and Polanski, would you get close to £5mn *in total*?

The electorate is polarised and attempts to triangulate via immigration haven't worked; the attempt to keep the US onside has lost votes; the red lines have restricted economic policies that might change outcomes. RIP MacSweeneyism.

If progressive, migration-liberal voters in Labour-held areas are so appalled by these tactics that they consider voting Green in a fuck-you to Reform - and because Polanski is a far more compelling anti-Farage than Starmer - than that is a good outcome for Reform. Such is the logic of FPTP.

I don't think Starmer has any conception of the "teaching" role of the premiership: the responsibility (& opportunity) to talk to the public, to shape how they understand the world & the choices before them. All the most impactful PMs have been teachers. Starmer seems actively to repudiate the role

These so-called "patriotic" 🇬🇧newspapers who brought you Brexit were never really patriotic at all. They are driven by a disdain for Britain's European neighbours, and a fawning obsession with America. They do not really want 🇬🇧 to be sovereign. They're content being a 🇺🇸vassal.

Europe has - in technical terms - an absolute sod load of potential economic leverage over the United States. It has turned the other cheek due to security concerns. The US seems intent on demonstrating that it will not guarantee European security. So Europe may start using that leverage.
