This reminds me of the fact that being pro-death penalty was the factor most strongly correlated to support for Brexit, that and having a preference for well done steak.

This illustrates not just the hypocrisy but the self-defeating nature of Trump's policies. Under MAGA doctrine, he enacts protectionism, trashes the alliance with Europe, and demands Europe take more responsibility for its own defence, and then finds it has consequences the US dislikes.

I appreciate that certain people may genuinely think FPTP is a superior system over and above the fact that it has served their parties well in the round, but I wonder how that will change if fragmentation becomes embedded like in the Netherlands.

Saw something in the news, wanted to make the something about himself, inserted himself into the news cycle, and then when they were released is doubling down on that because it keeps him in the news. Classic Donald pattern tbh

This is excellent from @stephenkb.bsky.social on one of my biggest concerns: the slow erosion of our shared reality as media fragments and people operate entirely seperate bubbles. We see the consequences of this in the States. A framented polity that can't agree on first principles is ungovernable

Still, at least all the people urging drastic reductions in migration will congratulate the government for enacting their policy preferences, acknowledge this inevitable trade-off and not make opportunistic attacks on the government for having lost control of the public finances.

Curtice identifies a key red flashing light in the MRPs - Labour are falling furthest in seats where Labour are first and con, ref or Nat are second. Labour therefore do a lot *worse* than uniform swing would predict (having done much better than uniform swing in 2024)

Elites that surrended to Trump in 2025 miscalculated, letting his imagined cultural dominance spook them into inflating the price of getting on his bad side. But now the logic of collective resistance has been confirmed as sound. Should have realized this earlier! newrepublic.com/article/2158...

Can anyone explain to me why this article doesn't mention anywhere that small boat crossings are down 42% from last year? That doesn't mean it's not an issue 781 people arrived in one day. But it seems like the sort of context a reputable news source might mention www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We've seen this a lot with Trump, when question of law enforcement becomes corrupted by political gamesmanship, even if it comes from good intentions. 'Arresting/prosecuting him will only make him stronger'. Maybe, but not enforcing the law equally also has a whole range of toxic downstream effects.

If Putin accepts, every European leader (at least) should boycott the event. The G20 no longer serves the useful purpose it had during the global financial crisis, when it was founded, so nothing that matters will be lost by not being there.

What I find fascinating/terrifying is do they really not understand, or do they understand but don’t know what to do and don’t want to admit it? It’s an important distinction, but the failure of much of the mainstream means no one seems capable of interrogating what they really think.
