Saying racism is a bit strong. More general ignorance. Suspect most people don't realise how much military tech has evolved. Also most people have a view of Africa informed by pictures of hungry children rather than gleaming towerblocks in the middle of Lagos!

Agree on the first point. The second aspect has always been challenging. But none of this means there is a good path for an "independent" UK.

I have obviously deep concerns about the far right. However, our fortunes as a nation are tied to Europe. I don't think we can easily say that just because we disagree with the politics in some European countries we can pull away from Europe!

Well exactly! It is why the leavers are so keen to deny this. They don't want to accept their "patriotic" cause was supported by our enemies (precisely because it was so damaging to us)

It seems indisputable that this is fact, and that Burnham has read intelligence service documents that have details. The public question shouldn’t be ‘what effect did it have?’ Because that cant be proved or litigated. It should be ‘why did Putin think Russia’s interests would be served by this?’

... And Man City won their titles fair and square and no need for any punishment! You are quite possibly right about brexit but it is inherently and unproveable hypothesis. Equally even if proven that it did have an impact, not much can be done now anyway!

Richard Johnson is a left wing pro brexit academic... and people wonder why the reputation of academia is so tarnished and universities are struggling!

Interesting that just under a quarter of tories are pro EU. They must really believe in the small state stuff to stick it out with a party that under Badenoch has got even more extreme on Europe!

My cynical view is that the left is full of people who see themselves as good people who fight for the oppressed underdog. Sadly I suspect this creates a massive blind spot which is easily manipulated by bad actors!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I get that but obviously if you say that then you are accused of being a Marxist who believes in "false consciousness"! I wish we had a right wing party lead by John Major again. At least when the right wing press went out to bat for him you felt you weren't getting something completely unhinged!

I suspect politicans like to think of the plucky entrepreneur who build his small business through hard graft and it now is worth billions and expanding internationally. They quietly forget most small businesses are one man with a white van doing odd jobs!

Kudos to the reform voters who think brexit did more harm than good. That's Olympic levels of cognitive dissonance!
010
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Similarly I'm willing to bet that a decent number of voters conflated free movement and refugees from the middle east. Indeed I doubt the "breaking point" poster would have worked had the queue of arrivals in the picture all been young Swedish au pairs!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This reminds me of the Norway model, Australia model, Turkey model, Afghanistan model crap we had with brexit. The polling on each had nothing to do with their trading status with the EU and everything to do with how the average voter saw the country in question!

Added to that everybody "knows" a story about a bloke who blagged a car because of a nebulous disability. Those stories might not be 100% true and certainly aren't the experience of most benefit claimants. But they are common i suspect they do hurt labour, if they aren't "doing something" about it!
000
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
That's completely fair. I suspect politicans of all (sensible) parties are in the same impossible position. No easy way to do wealth taxes and a young middle class who are (with university tuition) already seeing high marginal rates of tax!
101
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
No they are entitled to their views obviously. Equally I'm entitled to mine. I fully accept that I could be completely wrong and that young educated Labour voters on reasonable income are just waiting for tax increases!
000
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be challenging me if I had said. Starmer and his team were obsessed by the right wing press and should have listened to the true Labour voters who want tax rises and more money spent on benefits. It would have been the norm for this part of bluesky!
000
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Call me a cynic but I'm rapidly coming to the opinion that social media encourages a hive mind. Hence pointing out that taxes rises might hurt labour does end up feeling like you are saying a "heresy".
100
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I looked at all the other replies and they all conformed what came across to me as blueskys group think (essentially labour wins by improving public services and upping taxes). I'm sure a reply along those lines would have got a lot of likes here. I'm also not convinced it is true!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
You'll never win over bluesky with such heresies. Even if there is quite a lot of truth in it. I'll admit that I'm unconvinced that raising taxes on people with middle/high incomes, many of whom cannot afford to buy homes, is the big electoral win some blueskyers think!

If you add in £130m losses on “Reform TV” (aka GB News) the effective subsidy of Farage’s party from just four men tops £200m. You just have to join the dots app.prospectmagazine.co.uk/story/75017/...

GB news has provided relentless positive PR for Nigel Farage while racking up tens of millions in financial losses. And now there is a new channel in the offing

Obviously no. However, we absolutely should help Afghans (and their families) whose lives are at risk because they worked as translators for our soldiers during the war!

The original post was about kindertransport and how we could have let me people in (specifically the parents) and saved more lives! My view is that we should still focus on the positive and that those lives were saved because as you've demonstrated people (sadly) instinctively want closed borders!

Maybe you should read the thread you responded to and engage in some system 2 thinking of your own!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Would the parents of the kindertransport children have undermined "social coherience" had we allowed them in? Is that really your argument?
110
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Sure. Like most countries, we are full of people only capable of system one thinking and therefore struggle to get beyond caveman levels xenophobia! ... which is why we absolutely should celebrate successes like kindertransport! It may even help a few people reach more liberal conclusions!

There is a direct link between climate change and crop failures leading to hunger in poorer parts of the world. Similarly there is a link between AI and hacking which could put IT infrastructure at risk. Seems a bit of a leap to go from this to a human extinction event!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
No. One is a real existential risk as validated by the data. The other is a an existential risk based on some very speculative assumptions and alarmist commentary!
100
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The big irony is that humanity does face an existential risk. It is climate change. A token prediction engine that can hack a few insecure systems is not remotely in the same league!

He hasn't made a category error. The arguments he presented were reasonable. A lot of the anti AI arguments are skynet nonsense which sadly play well with too many blueskyers! Added to that the AI leaders are playing a cynical game of capture the regulator based on overblown risks!

The conclusion I've reached is that open platforms will eventually get degraded by a mixture of exhibitionists, bigots and bullies. The only good news is that I think the public are waking up to this and learning to ignore social media misinformation!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Indeed. And I deliberately pointed out there are other countries who have companies developing this tech. The fact that so many US companies developing this tech are seemingly aligned with Trump suggests this is a US problem rather than an LLM tech problem per se!
121
polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I deliberately named a French and a Canadian AI company. But sure the technology is evil because some US tech bros like Trump!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Fine then have a debate about why so many US technology leaders are paying homage to Trump. That's a perfectly topic to debate! However assuming that AI models that use the transformer algorithm (including those from Mistrial and Cohere) are inherently wicked because of that seems daft to me!

polseoglompa.bsky.social @polseoglompa.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Sure politics on X is toxic and Musk is a hideous person. However, ideally people on here should be able to have sensible conversations about AI. Seems particularly in the US, anti AI has become a culture war thing and that seems to block critical thinking about it!

There are so many angles to AI. There is the ability to speed up research (both socially useful and harmful outcomes). There is its impact on the society, economy and environment. All interesting and valid discussions. Sadly what you get here is often AI is evil and supporters are bad people!

One thing I would say is that academia is a deeply weird place. The output from academics is almost impossible to measure and the measures that exist are easily gamed. So politics is rife! For every genius that flourishes there, there are inevitably a lot of coasters and grifters!
