Why would we let Anthropic decide this for us? If you ascribe to a moral philosophy or religion that disavows being mean to a toaster, that is fine. It is not however fine for a tech company to make, functionally, a moral law for a talking word toaster that is promised to rule us one day.

Playing Titanfall 2 again and it just fills you with sadness, that specific strain of narrative first person shooter that Half-life wrought basically does not exist any more in that same way. We barely get a confusing single player campaign stapled to a multiplayer game any more.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

This is the maddening part — if someone made the claims being made about the future destructive + uncontrollable potential of AI about *virtually any other thing* that was being used worldwide, surely we’d act to stop allowing that thing to continue to grow and spread… right?

Op-eds, academic articles by Provost Santiago Schnell flagged as ‘AI-written’ by ‘near-zero error’ AI detector Pangram
Schnell said he used artificial intelligence for “making writing processes more efficient,” but that AI was not a “substitute” for his own “intellectual judgment or authorship.”

This graphic illustrates Canada's new "AI for all" policy. The inner circle that says "ADOPTION > ADOPTION > ADOPTION" is literal insanity and summarizes everything wrong with this policy. ised-isde.canada.ca/site/ised/en...
A circular diagram illustrating the six pillars of Canada's National AI Strategy surrounding the central theme “AI for All.”

The six segments are:

Pillar 1 (Protecting Canadians and Safeguarding Democracy)
Pillar 2 (Empowering Canadians)
Pillar 3 (Powering Shared Prosperity)
Pillar 4 (Building the Canadian Sovereign AI Foundation)
Pillar 5 (Scaling Canadian Champions)
Pillar 6 (Building Trusted Partnerships and Global Alliances).

One inner circle includes the words trust, opportunity and sovereignty. The other just says adoption adoption adoption.
