While I was struggling with protecting my mom's site from the bot swarm I kept asking everyone who is still in the industry how small sites who don't have a kid with a computer science degree survive and the answer was pretty much "they don't" and that's so grim

I was then perplexed by the Vanderbilt/Washington University report. Health inequity and disparities, lack of diversity, urban racial segregation, structural racial discrimination, each of which is taken as an a priori societal ill to be addressed, are seemingly proper objects of study, research and, yes, at times advocacy, across much of my university’s vast research enterprise. And yet, for my colleagues in the humanities, the report casts the same a priori assumptions as suspect, as political goals that threaten to “distort the scholarly enterprise.”

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Most histories take the double helix as the obvious goal of xrc on DNA fibers. If we want to honor Franklin, we need to stop trying to explain her work as almost getting the double helix. We need to understand her on her own terms. The Sponsel and Sutton paper takes us a good step in that direction

As I listened back to the interview I found myself once again thinking "this is why this motion exists." The fact that three years into a genocide, it is still possible for someone to go on the BBC and talk about the country committing that genocide as a moral and admirable project ...

I am not saying that there is nothing to be criticised about this motion, I myself have been very torn over it as I know many other members of the Party have been, including I'm sure its leadership. But I'm noticing that there is some vital information missing in much of the discussion around it

Much ado has been made about an amendment to safeguard Jewish members that was voted down at the conference, what is missing from this conversation is that amendment conflated Jews and Zionism in a way that the motion itself is careful not to do...

The motion's drafters have also made clear that this motion will not be used to target Jews who attend Zionist institutions, like synagogues, many of which call themselves as Zionist. This has now been reiterated by the leadership of the Green Party

Reading the news, it would be easy to believe that the Green Party has adopted a policy to expel its Jewish members, prevent them from attending synagogue or at the very least scrutinise their activities outside the party. *None of that has happened* 🧵

The motions' drafters have stated elsewhere that they do not accept that there are non-racist forms of Zionism, however, other definitions of Zionism - for example, if you call yourself a Zionist because of a belief in Jewish autonomy—are not covered by this motion and not declared racist

The behaviour of these systems, such as their outputs, may well be CONSISTENT with these systems having the capacity of e.g. addition. But the logical form we deploy cannot be that because something correlated with our assumptions that our assumptions are (formally) correct.

One of the most upsetting things for people trained in formal computational theory, who are not AI boosters, to witness is how claims about the outputs of systems with no formal specification are taken as if they are indicative of formally linked capacities, such as the ability to add; see thread:
