ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

Jacob Geller is no longer a part of MinnMax. He won't be on content moving forward and we won't be publicly airing this week's episode of The MinnMax Show. We're in shock and deeply hurt. Thank you for your patience during this sensitive time.

One of my incredibly weird favourite things are air raid sirens or similar. One of those goes off - real life, tv, film, soundtracks - I'm hootering and hollering.

"What if some people deserve it?" is a stumbling block in the argument for many. Easy to undermine or circumvent altogether: how many innocent people would you kill in order to keep killing the people you "know" are guilty? Because there is no system that doesnt torture and kill innocent people.

You know a cool thing you can do if you're trying to start up a tiny business is to get in your own way constantly. Just keep tripping yourself up so you never make it to the starting line and never need to face the possibility of real failure.

Here's a rather poignant example of how terrible this piece is
Quote from the linked article under discussion, where the authors justify the use of a technique they have applied in this 'work'. It reads, "In journalism, this type of stylometrics is how the Sunday Times figured out J.K. Rowling was writing under the mannish pseudonym of Robert Galbraith. As for language forensics, the highest profile case was how The Unabomber was identified based on his writing style."A quote from a BBC news article about people leaking who really wrote the Strike books, JK Rowling. It reads, "He confided in his wife's best friend that Rowling had written The Cuckoo's Calling under a pseudonym.

It was then publicly revealed by The Sunday Times in July last year.

Rowling took legal action later that month against Gossage and his friend Judith Callegari, who had revealed the information during a Twitter exchange with journalist India Knight."

The only source of the claims about her statements are from the US government - quotes entirely sourced from the FBI agent. She may have done the correct thing, but everyone is breathlessly spreading what an FBI agent is claiming she said and not what she has said herself.

This attitude being ingrained in society alongside the idea that every accusation by a woman is innately untrustworthy and untrue is a big part of what makes you go insane over time.

Btw GenAI doesnt induce "brain damage" the same way that not doing anything for yourself doesnt induce brain damage. These are different concepts and the people trying to scare monger you against AI by comparing it to a car accident are only doing a disservice to real efforts to extract AI from life

If any of you ever want to write an article trying to prove something was done with or by GenAI, let me hit it with a stick first. I will stop you from embarrassing yourself and will more than happily explain some very basic scientific concepts to you.

So these people are human trash who apparently think we're all incredibly stupid. If someone is secretly using AI to write anything, nothing in this is appropriate or suitable for evidencing or uncovering it.
We then used machine learning and stylometrics to analyze the growing influence of large language models (LLMs) on her work. Our analysis shows that Reed’s writing changes at the same time (and in the ways) that AI models changed. LLMs tend to be more long-winded than humans, and Reed’s writing has gotten more long-winded since the release of ChatGPT. Over a three year span, her writing went from being at grade level for a high school junior to being as difficult to read as an academic paper.1.1: Undisclosed AI Use

The point of journalism is to tell human stories. Humans have a way of understanding the world and their role within it which AI does not comprehend. Telling human stories with AI words might get something on a screen, but the true author will never care about the people involved.

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!
Joyce Carol Oates
This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.
