The sense of betrayal is intense. And I’ve seen literally dozens of comrades ditch social media entirely over it.

Another way to put this, and I think about it constantly: The only way we can defeat rape culture is if men become absolutely terrified of doing anything wrong in terms of sexual violence, to the same extent women are terrified living under the terror of rape culture.

Before RJ became mainstream, it used to be incredibly common for RJ to not involve perpetrators at all. It was focused on repairing harm for victims. These days, most people see RJ as a mandate for the victim to change their perpetrator. It’s not fair, it rarely works, and it’s dangerous.

Restorative justice also has huge limitations in the context of sexual violence. The perpetrator must confess. There cannot be a structural power disparity between victim and perpetrator. It is not safe for intimate partner violence. It is too time-intensive for victims with multiple perpetrators.
