trying my best to stay out of rape discourse because the past few years have already been very hard & it seems like 60% of people are cool with a world with a little rape in it but whoever this was invented “manic pixie rape girl in the lives of the men they helped improve” & that sucks. it sucks.
I don't mean to downplay sexual assault but l also have known a lot of good people who had to learn healthy boundaries by violating someone else's and never forgetting the experience

It honeslty just shows me how much rape culture exists. With James Somerton, we all collectively agreed he didn’t deserve a platform anymore, and he disappeared. I’m sure he’s got some job somewhere, living a life. But an admitted rapist, well, he we must forgive, because some of us liked his stuff.

For rapists to be rehabilitated they have to both want to be and also accountable about their own power seeking. He never apologized until he got caught and all the while was building a public platform giving him fans and aggregate power that a rapist cannot be trusted with. You are fucking clueless

even the verbiage of the original post makes me sick. there is no "Jacob Geller situation." Jacob Geller raped a woman. that is the situation. there is nothing to feel complex or nuanced feelings about. he raped a woman. that is the end of the conversation

she's not quite excusing rape, but something much more disingenuous -- she's re-centering the moral conversation around the perpetrator while presenting that re-centering as nuance.

"I don't want this guy to have my attention anymore" is not annihilation. "I don't think his collaborators owe him continued association" isn't annihilation. "I believe he may have changed, & I still don't want to consume his work" isn't annihilation. "I don't forgive him" isn't annihilation.

I thought more about this piece... Can the victim be rehabilitated to the point of overcoming the trauma and no longer having this affect her life and her thoughts? No. At what point can he be considered redeemed? At the same point the victim can completely move on. Which is effectively never 1/2

If he's hindered then he's a victim of his own actions and nothing someone else did to him. That's his lot and for him to figure out. It's not really a concern of anyone else. His punishment apart from legal ones is living with this and the consequences of his action. This is it. 2/2

I am no expert on restorative justice, but it seems to me that we cannot assume a transformation for the better from someone who engages with that level of delusion. I loved his work, and he should lose his platform, especially since it was built upon the idea that he could put this behind him.

Confidently navigating life with the assumption that your prior harms will not bar you from future opportunities is a distinctly white male priviledge. As a black person in the US whose community is inspected for criminality, seeing the selective use of restorative justice is very jarring.

Additionally, there’s the question of trust. How do we know that it was just this one incident? How do we know that it didn’t happen before, or since? Jacob Geller cultivated influence. He intentionally put himself in a position where he would have been able to reoffend. How do we know he didn’t?

Rape isn’t like most other crimes. I don’t think it’s morally wrong to not disclose a history of drug crimes or standard property crimes. But rape is a profound violation of power that strips agency from the victim. It can be more psychologically devastating than even other forms of violent crime.

If someone has a drinking problem, you don’t put them in a bar. If a teacher abuses someone, even if he sincerely rehabilitates, you still do not leave him in charge of children. If someone uses their power to rape someone, you do not hand them power and influence once more.

Restorative justice does not demand that things go back to how they were, only that we should try to rehabilitate perpetrators and provide them dignity, respect, and a chance at an honest life in the community. It DOES NOT suggest that we put them back into a context in which they can reoffend.

But we are not in a court of law right now. We are not trying to kill Geller, or imprison him, or even fine him. We are saying he should not be cultivating money and influence from his platform. That is an eminently reasonable position, and invoking restorative justice to deny it is absurd.

We so often treat the loss of power and prestige as a punishment, and it certainly can be, but it's also perhaps the gentlest but most crucial way of preventing further harm. Undermining power and prestige because of lost trust isn't anything like throwing someone in prison.

I really don't think the average LLM user knows how much brute force computing power is required to make LLMs work as they do, and part of that is the fact that you are just interacting with essentially a terminal that doesn't really do any of the work.

I think it's simple. LLMs do work at things that LLMs are good at, like broadly categorising large amounts of data. Which is not the same as being sentient. So they can absolutely be used for evil, but they cannot be used as a replacement for a human brain, like the companies want us to believe.
