Talent isn't rare. Throw an apple & you hit someone with talent. Perseverance? rare. Work ethic? exceedingly rare; the willingness to grind. Being able to endure the scorn, rejection & privation a life in the arts dooms you to in the United States is unicorn-scarce. But talent? Talent is everywhere.

this is maybe trite at this point but it is in your interest to find ways to create things. basically everyone wants you to be consuming nonstop. making stuff, from cooking to photography or whatever, can help you feel more in control. doesn’t even have to be something you share with other people

Two more ceilings from Detroit. Will have to come back better prepared for the lower light with a tripod.
An elaborate Art Deco ceiling from the Fisherman Building in Detroit, MI. Three panels are shown with borders between them in red, blue, and cream. In the panels intricate designs are inflated in a large “X” which sits over top of a diamond shape underneath.A section of the lobby ceiling in the Guardian Building in Detroit. Across the center is a red band with a tiled white triangle motif and rays emanating from a central circle. Around this are various diamond and triangle motifs formed by lines, lights, and colored tiles. The design evokes Southwestern US Native American designs.

Relevant: this essay from 1941 making the rounds today, especially these last paragraphs. harpers.org/archive/1941...
Kind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi. They may be the gentle philosopher whose name is in the Blue Book, or Bill from City College to whom democracy gave a chance to design airplanes—you’ll never make Nazis out of them. But the frustrated and humiliated intellectual, the rich and scared speculator, the spoiled son, the labor tyrant, the fellow who has achieved success by smelling out the wind of success—they would all go Nazi in a crisis.

Believe me, nice people don’t go Nazi. Their race, color, creed, or social condition is not the criterion. It is something in them.

Those who haven’t anything in them to tell them what they like and what they don’t—whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi. It’s an amusing game. Try it at the next big party you go to.
