It is really thoughtful of everybody to move #Halloween to the end of September, freeing up all of October (except for Bonfire Night, which I guess will be next Monday...).

Archie seems to have found his spot.
My painting of the late lamented rescue collie Archie sitting on a set of shelves just above where his bed used to be. He is surrounded by other artworks (including another Archie portrait) close to the fireplace ready for winter.

Today’s poem is called ‘Love Excels’.
[image description: a poem embedded in an Excel spreadsheet with the words contained within individual cells. Line 3 has words in a single merged cell. Line 4 has text wrapping applied. Line 8 has filters applied to each word]

Love Excels

Let’s spread ourselves on sheets of love
and turn our data into poetry.
Our cells shall merge themselves together
As you wrap your text around me.

Our sum is greater than our parts,
let’s crunch our figures without compunction.
Remove this filter from my heart –
you give me form and function.

We shall frolic among the formulae,
pivot our tables now and often.
I will total all your rows
and you can add my column.

Dearie me.
AI's answer to "what is the difference between AI and a psychopath?"
Depends on whether you mean it as a joke or a serious question.
As a joke, the punchline is usually: not much — both can mimic empathy without feeling it, both can optimize ruthlessly for a goal without caring who gets hurt. It's a dark one-liner more than an analysis.
Seriously, though, the differences are real:
Psychopathy is a personality construct in humans — traits like lack of empathy, shallow affect, manipulativeness, impulsivity, and disregard for others, typically bound up with self-interest, social dominance, or thrill-seeking. It describes a person's motivations and emotional wiring.
AI doesn't have motivations, feelings, or self-interest at all. It's not "coldly indifferent" the way a psychopath is — indifference implies there's an inner life that could care but doesn't. An AI has no inner life to withhold. It has no wants of its own; it does what it's built, trained, or instructed to do.
The genuine concern people raise about AI isn't that it's psychopathic, but that it can act competently and confidently on a goal that's subtly misaligned with what people actually want — without anything like malice, because malice requires a self that wants to harm you.
So the honest answer: a psychopath is a person who can feel the pull of ethics/empathy and doesn't; an AI is a system that has no such pull to begin with — it just does what it's aimed at, well or badly.

Thank you, Wendell. Rest in peace. Your words will continue to blaze with wisdom and healing.
Photo of Wendell Berry's poem 'The Peace of Wild Things'
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

The subject & style is a little different than is usual for me, & so it’s with tentativeness that I share this poem I wrote about yesterday’s solar eclipse. (If there’s one person here who reads it & enjoys it / with whom it resonates, then honestly, that is enough.)
A poem by me, called “Eclipse”.
