I’ve made a strong start on my bid to walk 100 miles in a month. I know it doesn’t seem far, but post-surgery and on fatigue-causing cancer drugs, it’s a challenge. 3.5 miles so far today with good company on a perfect autumn day at Saltram House.

Happy National #Poetry Day! Learn more about one of Wales's most revered poets in 'R. S. Thomas, Desperado: Cultural Warrior of Wales' by M. Wynn Thomas. 📚️ www.uwp.co.uk/book/r-s-tho... #NationalPoetryDay

‘M. Wynn Thomas, with his usual
wry wit and poetic perception, walks
the path around the distant and
rugged terrain of R. S. Thomas. This
book is like light through a prism,
the whole spectrum of the poet’s
hints, ambiguities and shards on full
view, and admired with such a
passionate and joyful questioning.
No one reads between R.S.’s lines
with such clarity, and to read this
book is a teasing delight to both the
parched soul and roving mind.’

Dean of Southwark

If you've got some free time on your hands one of the best things you can do is to learn a language. It doesn't matter which language it is, learning any language makes the world a smaller place and brings you closer together with people you wouldn't otherwise speak to.

Lots of new books coming in. Never mind the signed Michael Douglas, much more prestigious is Red River Valley from @imcmillan.bsky.social I think my colleague's already read most of it, chuckling as I type. #booksky #choosebookshops

A photo of Ian McMillan's Red River Valley, two stacks of the book side one, with a copy propped up face-forward at each end. Magenta cover with the author's name of letters in different bright colours, and a blue graphic of a river running down the centre of the book cover with the title in yellow type within the river.

By law nobody should be allowed to direct a company until they've kept bees long enough to produce 40 jars of honey without losing a hive. Competent leaders should easily be able to provide for a colony's needs while ensuring that they are productive. And we need more bees.

On a post-it note on a green tiled wall in my writing: A woman sits opposite me on the Tube. She wears pink axolotl shoes with green beetle-patterned socks, fishnet tights and a pink dress with a pattern of babies on it. She holds a donut-patterned bag on her lap. Her lime-green hair is up in a ponytail. She is magnificent.

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.

The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States
