Seems to me like we're due for a reconsideration—and perhaps even an exhibition?—of the mostly forgotten illustrator Boris Artzybasheff, whose hallucinatory mid-20th-century automation drawings seem eerily prescient right now. Trolley Problem
The trolley problem in two panels. trolley is approaching a switch. on one track is the roadrunner; there is nothing on the other track. standing to the side holding the lever is the coyote.
In the second panel the coyote has thrown a switch and the trolley has moved sideways off the tracks and has run over the coyote. the Road Runner stands there going MEEP, MEEP!

Donald Crabtree was a master flint-knapper & a subject expert in traditional stone-shaping. On two separate occasions, he fashioned obsidian knives to be used by surgeons operating on him: a partial lung removal & open heart surgery. Let's talk about the how & why of obsidian blades!
Description:
A photographic slide of Don E. Crabtree flintknapping with obsidian while seated inside. He's wearing a violently 1970's outfit of red hawaiian shirt and burgundy pants. He holds a piece of rock in both hands, but admires the knapping work he's just done.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

I don’t know if they let cowboys in 👼🏻😈 #art
A digital drawing with fairly flat, textured colors in a limited palette of pink, red, yellow, and cyan. A curvy cowgirl in super short shorts looks over her shoulder at the viewer as she stands before the coffin-shaped white gate to heaven. It’s locked with heavy chains and two little naked kewpie cherubs yell at her “No fucking way”, “get lost sister”, and “god said no. She holds a dead copperhead behind her back. Two imps flying overhead tell her “that’s okay” and “we’ll take you.”

Working on an A.I. policy for my calculus classes. Decided to be upfront about the current situation with LLMs and to give a heartfelt explanation for why the course still matters.
Al policy

Context

Artificial Intelligence, or "A.l.," Is a broad term used to refer to several different kinds of technologies. The kind most relevant to this class are Large Language Models (LLMs), which use mathematics to analyze large amounts of human-produced text and then generate new text that simulates what a human might write in response to prompts or questions. Some examples of LLMs are OpenAl's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini.Current LLMs can provide a solution to any calculus problem I give you. So why should we work on them, you might ask? Here's the thing: for the most part, the problems were already solved anyway. Calculus as a subject is nearly 400 years old. It has reached into virtually every modern scientific and economic field. And while I would like to believe that I have crafted a few new problems with some small amount of originality tailored to this class, for the most part I have curated a collection of exercises drawn from my years of teaching calculus. Those exercises come from textbooks, workshops, friends, and other fields of study, as well as my own invention.
And they nearly all have known solutions, often with fairly standard approaches.
Before A.I. became widely available, you could find those solutions in another textbook, or from a friend's notes, or through a repository on the internet. The point of this class is not necessarily to solve problems that have never been solved before. It is for you to develop habits of thinking that are used by mathematicians, scientists, and policymakers-to develop a sort of mental toolbox that can be applied to new problems. If along the way you happen to find a new way of solving one of the class exercises, that's great! I am constantly learning new things from my students. But you will be bereft of discovery if you rely on a LLM for solutions to the calculus problems before you. Here I mean the discovery of having your own realizations, crystallizing your own internal understanding, claiming the knowledge in a way that cannot be taken away from you.
That ownership is what I want for you, and that is what the course is built around.

It's safe to assume that all major LLMs are scraping Bluesky data to train future models. As an open protocol, Bluesky is one of the few sources of fresh human-generated content that anybody can gobble up. So all this is probably going in the models. There are submarines in the Great Lakes.

It’s not hard to see how fragile the AI industry is, and how primed it is to explode, and how damaging that explosion will be — and the media will be partially to blame for championing AI companies and ignoring the risks until it was too late. www.wheresyoured.at/the-subprime-data-center-crisis/
As I hope I’ve made clear, I believe the vast majority of AI data centers are the AI bubble’s subprime loans, and will collapse when they face the cold, harsh reality of “someone actually paying money for AI compute,” much like subprime mortgages collapsed when teaser rates ended and homeowners were forced to pay their actual bills.

This is an inevitability — and something that’s very obvious when you sit down and actually try and work out how much capacity there is versus how much people are actually paying for AI compute. The fact that I, a random guy, albeit with a (recently-acquired) Bloomberg Terminal, am the one to say this is a sign that the media is not trying hard enough to protect consumers.

Every time that the media has accepted a spurious announcement or a questionable run rate or a circular deal or the outright refusal of hyperscalers to disclose their AI revenues, they help inflate the AI bubble and endanger the futures of millions of people, especially those tied up in a stock market increasingly-dominated by NVIDIA and other tech stocks.
Unlike the great financial crisis, the calamity to follow will be easily-traced to a complete failure of anybody to measure or demand measurements of the actual demand for AI services and AI compute.

There will be attempts to claim it was too complex or multi-faceted to pry apart, and those attempts will likely be made by media outlets that failed their readers, viewers, listeners, and the general public.

Bubbles can only inflate in an information-poor — and information-deprived — environment.

They inflate much faster and more-dangerously when that information is poisoned by marketing spiel and misinformation peddled by those who are meant to tell people the truth.

This is Comet Leonard during its approach to the Sun, imaged by Gerald Rhemann on Christmas Day 2021. The comet had been discovered earlier that year, and broke apart in 2022. This photo won the overall prize for Rhemann of the Royal Observatory Greenwich's Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2022.
A bright point of light at the top of the image is the comet's nucleus; the comet's gas and dust tails trail from the nucleus to the bottom of the image. Complex structures in the dust tail result from outbursts from the nucleus as it undergoes solar heating.

This morning in 1945—at 5:29 AM (Mountain War Time)—about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, the nuclear age began with a big bang. Contrary to later widespread assumptions, the area surrounding the remote TRINITY test site was not uninhabited, and the fallout did not drift away harmlessly.
A black and white, high-speed photograph of the Trinity explosion at 0.025 seconds, showing what looks like a very large, slightly irregular bubble with a curtain of dust all around its bottom edge against a pitch dark sky. A scale indicating “100 meters” shows that the fireball was already approximately three times that size.Another black and white photograph of the Trinity explosion a few milliseconds later, showing an almost ghostly mushroom cloud with glowing tendrils rising from the ground above the very bright fireball.A black and white photograph of the Trinity mushroom cloud with the same 100-meter scale, this time at 60 seconds post-detonation, showing a very large and billowy mushroom cloud rising high into the sky. The sky is less black and more gray, illuminated by the light from the cloud.Another black and white photograph of the Trinity mushroom cloud taken some minutes after the previous photograph and showing the ominous looking mushroom cloud at a distance, its top spreading out and merging with regular clouds. With the sun rising, the sky is beginning to illuminate.
