I am super excited to announce that we have a tenure-track faculty position in biophysics open in the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon! 🧪 Interfolio link: apply.interfolio.com/174360 PLEASE, share widely across the blue skies! Let me briefly explain what we're looking for: 1/10
Tenure-track Position in Biophysics at Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Physics

Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Open Date: Sep 19, 2025

Description
The Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in biophysics. The appointment is intended to be at the Assistant Professor level, but exceptional candidates at a higher level may also be considered. We seek outstanding candidates with a strong record in cellular and subcellular biophysics. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to, uncovering how key characteristics of living systems arise from the interplay between supramolecular cellular structures, how the emergent cellular circuitry defines goals and enables robust decision making, and how metabolic resources are allocated. This encompasses understanding of how information is learned, stored, transduced, and processed across subcellular structures. Applicants with theoretical, data science, or experimental backgrounds within biological physics are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will strengthen and extend research programs of current biophysics faculty in the Department of Physics and collaborate with broader life science activities across many departments at CMU and the wider Pittsburgh area.

Democrats should become the anti-corruption party. 72% of voters think a member of Congress would likely accept a bribe if offered one. 80% say donors run DC. The solution isn’t left vs right, it’s clean vs corrupt. But first, Democrats must reform themselves and reject big money.

Critical part of the President's new $100,000 charge for H1-B visas: The Administration can also offer a $100,000 discount to any person, company, or industry that it wants. Replacing rules with arbitrary discretion. Want visas? You know who to call and who to flatter.

Induction stoves are quieter, cooler, and produce less toxic pollution than gas. On the other hand, they also cook better, as a growing number of professional chefs recognize.

Of course this idea of argument as an exercise of power, where one party refuses to engage honestly (to actually make their case, and to strive for self-consistency and openness) is itself a hallmark of fascism.
Quote from Dr. Hancox-Li's article which reads: "In the current system the parties at the Court can never talk honestly or directly about the principles at stake. No good faith discussion is possible under the current regime of relentless and partisan dishonesty; no clear and public principles can be known when the real mainsprings of Republican thought are cloaked in the pretext of originalism. Instead we have a game of endless Calvinball, in which new doctrines are invented whole cloth—the "major questions doctrine," the "qualified immunity doctrine," the "unitary executive doctrine"—in order to enable whatever the Republican cause du jour happens to be." With the first two sentences, ending with "pretext of originalism" highlighted by me.

Whoa. Spicy footnote from Justice Jackson, dissenting in the ADA case. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
The majority’s contention that I reject “ ‘pure textualism’ [a]s insuf
ficiently pliable to secure the result [I] seek,” ante, at 10, stems from an
unfortunate misunderstanding of the judicial role. Our interpretative
task is not to seek our own desired results (whatever they may be). And,
indeed, it is precisely because of this solemn duty that, in my view, it is
imperative that we interpret statutes consistent with all relevant indicia
of what Congress wanted, as best we can ascertain its intent. A method
ology that includes consideration of Congress’s aims does exactly that—
and no more. By contrast, pure textualism’s refusal to try to understand
the text of a statute in the larger context of what Congress sought to
achieve turns the interpretive task into a potent weapon for advancing
judicial policy preferences. By “finding” answers in ambiguous text, and
not bothering to consider whether those answers align with other sources
of statutory meaning, pure textualists can easily disguise their own pref
erences as “textual” inevitabilities. So, really, far from being “insuffi
ciently pliable,” I think pure textualism is incessantly malleable—that’s
its primary problem—and, indeed, it is certainly somehow always flexi
ble enough to secure the majority’s desired outcome.

The destruction will be so complex that the next several administrations won’t be able to repair the damage swiftly, it’ll be cost prohibitive. So what we need to do is tax the rich and corporations and add the required number of IRS employees to start clawing back the cost of the damage.

there is zero logic to QI. if it's unconstitutional, it is regardless of the number of times it's been litigated. the idea that you'd need *notice* not to do this is absurd and morally bankrupt.
Allegation: Green Bay, Wisc. corrections officers throw hunger-striking inmate in a cold cell overnight—where the temperature drops below freezing—without clothes, mattress, or blankets. Seventh Circuit: Until now, officers could have thought that was okay. QI here but not going forward. Partial dissent: We don’t need a case on point; this obviously violates the Eighth Amendment.
