Parliament Matters - Joanna Cherry: The SNP, Westminster, and a decade of political battles
Listen to Parliament Matters - Joanna Cherry: The SNP, Westminster, and a decade of political battles by Hansard Society on Podcast Addict. Joanna Cherry joins us this week to discuss her newly published memoir, in which she looks back on some of the most contentious battles in British and Scottish politics in the last two decades. She arrived at Westminster in 2015 as one of 56 SNP MPs elected in a historic landslide that transformed Scottish politics and made the SNP the third-largest party in the House of Commons. She describes the excitement – and occasional hostility – that greeted the new contingent and explains why her experience at Westminster left her believing that the Scottish Parliament could learn a lot from the Commons, particularly when it comes to cross-party working, debate, dissent, and committee scrutiny. One of the central arguments of Cherry’s memoir is that the SNP repeatedly failed to exploit moments of political leverage and that it pursued the wrong strategy for securing another Scottish independence referendum after the loss in 2014. She sets out what she thinks the party could have done differently and why she believes support for independence has now become increasingly detached from support for the SNP itself. Her national profile grew dramatically during the Brexit yea

I remain of the view that regulation of social media is better than a ban for young people. But I also pretty much agree with all these proposals.
Ban continuous scroll. Appears to one of the most addictive features with no downside in banning it.
Require a 20s delay before playing any video. Would make essentially no difference to watching TV episodes or films, but would effectively nuke short-form video.8
Require all platforms to have the default feed

as people you follow, in chronological order. Reduces algorithmic effects.
Any platform that uses an algorithm more complex than ‘people you follow in chronological order’ to be treated as a publisher, and held to account for content. As above, but more robustly.
Require users to use real names. Much of the worst content is produced by anons; it would also make it easier to hold people to account for things that are banned in real life, such as libel or incitement to violence.
Require all platforms to provide a suite of user tools. This might include hard blocks, ability to detag yourself or restrict ‘quote tweets’, and community notes.

NIGEL FARAGE - AN APOLOGY. thecritic.co.uk/once...
NIGEL FARAGE — AN APOLOGY. Last week, I noted that since The Guardian revealed that he’d accepted a £5 million “gift” from a crypto-billionaire, the leader of Reform has carefully avoided places where people might ask him questions. In response, I find I’m now being shunned by Reform: when shame-vacuum finance spokesman Jenrick spoke on Monday morning, I was the only sketchwriter not invited.

To some journalists, the discovery that they were no longer going to have to attend events with Richard Tice would be a source of profound relief. Such hacks might take it as a compliment to have so riled the not-at-all fragile people who run Reform that they enacted petty revenge. But I am not that kind of writer. Goodness no.

So I would like to take this opportunity to say that I apologise for ever implying that Farage might be scared of questions. Quite the opposite: the leader of Reform is a giant among pygmies, a vigorously healthy man of tremendous moral and physical courage who has only

This is some genuinely psycho shit...
Pam Bondi loves dogs. Always had them, one after another. She got involved with dog shelters and dog rescue, and once pulled off to the side of a busy road and got out of her car to chase down a stray. Another dog she helped was a Saint Bernard named Master Tank. She adopted him from a shelter after he was lost during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, not long after her own Saint Bernard had died. The story has been told but bears repeating. Master Tank belonged to Steve and Dorreen Couture and their grandson, who was 4, recovering from the murder-suicide of his parents and losing his dog during the storm. Bondi said the dog was a “walking skeleton” and “dying from heartworms” when she adopted him. The Coutures eventually tracked down Master Tank, but instead of giving him back, Bondi hired a lawyer, who accused the Coutures of abusing the dog, which Bondi had renamed Noah. “She lied,” Dorreen told a Palm Beach Post columnist years later. “My little grandson begged her to take the dog home, and she refused. She thought she would just wear us down. That we were unstable people and would just quit.” The case was settled out of court, with Bondi securing visitation rights, but she never did visit. She got another dog.
