Both quartz and graphite can form in the same kinds of rocks, either entangled together or with graphite as an inclusion within quartz. This gradient most often in hydrothermal fluid. As the fluids cool, carbon precipitates out first as graphite with silica crystallizing into clear quartz crystals around it.

A somewhat interesting small earthquake--USGS puts the depth of this event at about 28 km, the slab model here (I assume Slab2) puts the top of the slab at more than 40 km depth. The epicenter sits very close to the Tacoma fault (see image). earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

USGS interactive map for the 4.2 earthquake that happened about 20 minutes ago. The southern part of Puget Sound is shown, as are mostly west-east oriented thin red lines marking mapped faults in the upper plate's crust and thick red lines oriented nearly north-south marking the depth of the subducting Juan de Fuca slab. The earthquake's epicenter is about a quarter of the way between the 40 km contour of the slab (to the left) and the 60 km contour (right edge of image). The fault nearest the epicenter has a pop-up box showing it is the Tacoma fault.

Look at what I was treated to today when opening an old Play Doh can we use for our topography lab: halite crystals! The lid was slightly ajar letting evaporation do its thing since February. Halite crystals and hairs grew on thin ridges w/high surface area to volume ratios. Vote #halite!

#Nolo is now a Category 4 hurricane and is forecast to strengthen to a category 5. It would be the fourth Cat 5 Pacific hurricane northeast of the date line in 2026, the most in one season in history. This is all happening amid record warm oceans, supercharged by El Niño and climate change.

Remnants of hurricanes #Odalys and #Polo will send immense amounts of water vapor into the South-Central U.S. this week. Forecasts call for 1-in-10 to 1-in-25 year amounts of rain in a three-day span in parts of Arizona and New Mexico. September may end as Albuquerque's wettest month on record.

Hurricane #Nolo took a sharp turn west and passed about 150 south of Hawaii, sparing the state from a storm that at one point was forecast to cause potentially catastrophic flooding. There were isolated road closures, but the National Weather Service is not reporting any significant flash flooding.
