Did a shit ton of work on the backyard patio/pergola renovation today. Including renting and physically picking up a plate compactor to put into my EV9. All the mow strips are in and level, now to screed level the sandy soil for pavers and put up the skeleton of the pergola for foot placement.
How the lawn started this morning after I used a sod cutter yesterday to cut underneath it. There’s a fence in a garbage can and a good piece of lawn on the right side. I ended up taking all of this sod and lawn and putting it in holes to fill in our dirt and gravel alley. The after side view after all the grass was taken out and all the new mower edge was put into place. We had a few boards of mower edge left over from the last time. We did the patio like 20 years ago and they still worked great and we recycled the rest.I’m more front on View of the soon-to-be patio with a sample paver in front that looks like Flagstone. It’s actually engineered concrete. Some of the furniture is on the dirt pad because I had to mow the lawn.

Lots of repaving and steam rolling happening three blocks away from my house this morning. They're the very sharp spikes on my seismograph
24 hour graphical output (seismograph) showing various wiggles and squiggles from around the world in my basement. Here the bottom several hours show lots of sharp spikes in in the bottom 6 rows representing the last three hours. That's from some sort of heavy machinery flattening the road surface. The cigar shapes are trains on one of three nearby tracks You can see the doppler-like build up of the waves as they get closest to my station, then gradually space out as train moves away.

Note the right lateral offset of the yellow centerline of you look across the fault. (Traffic spotters had my back for this quick snap).
A road through the central coast of California, as viewed from the central line of the highway, looking off into the distance before the road turns. There’s mountains in the background and a few oak trees on the side of the road, but the important feature is at the bottom of the photo where there’s a rumble piece of asphalt that goes across the entire highway. That is the San Andreas fault and if you look across the rumble area, you can easily see the yellow center line has been offset to the right by a couple inches. this offset has happened within the last 10 years or so as they frequently repave this section.

Once @geotripper.bsky.social said he was giving students 2hrs to explore, I immediately thought I felt good enough to try the entire Condor Gulch to Moss Springs via High Peak Trail. I’d never been to High peaks, so making the 5mi, 1500’ hike in 1hr47min while still getting photos made me giddy.
CalTopo trail map showing my path from Condor Gulch over High Peaks Trail and down Moses Springs Trail for a total 5.15 miles (gps was clipped in one canyon) in 1hr47min. Profile shows 1500’ of total elevation gain.

Please enjoy a small moment of solitude along the High Peaks Trail this afternoon in Pinnacles National Park. The rhyolitic rocks are the eroded remains of a 22Ma composite volcano complex whose other half is down south 185 miles or so in Lancaster, CA thanks to San Andreas Fault.

Next stop in Hollister to check out a creeping portion of the Calaveras Fault. (Yes, yes, @xenolith.bsky.social I admit Hollister’s have their faults). Check out the right lateral offsets in town!
Concrete drainage gully in an asphalt alley that is offset to the right where it crosses the Calaveras Fault. Sidewalk in front of a cool Victorian house. The sidewalk has been offset in the right lateral fashion by about 10 inches or so.The most famous right lateral offset feature in the town of Hollister is the concrete retaining wall in front of somebody’s front yard that was built circa 1945 and has been offset from the straight section of the wall about 40 inches. Quick math shows that that’s about a half inch of slip per year over the 80 years to offset it that much.

The right side of the image shows way forms with the wiggles, jumping pretty nicely when the pee wave arrives and the bottom graph showing the frequency and hertz and there’s a distinct impulse and then low frequency rumbling

One feature of @everythingwx.bsky.social I really enjoy is the embedded normal and record temps.
Screenshot of the EverythingWeather app for Turlock, California showing a wind forecast for the day on the top going anywhere from 3 to 5 miles an hour but highlighting the today weather section. It says it’s going to be mostly sunny with a high near 97 W. north Northwest wind 1 to 6 miles an hour. Underneath that it says the normal high temperature for the day is 82° and the record high is 105 from 2024

The Dome fire in Yosemite keeps slowly chugging along to the north in a little bit to the east. it’s been burning for 19 days now and it’s growth has somewhat been hampered by the granitic composition of the terrain. Crews are now doing structure protection measures at Ostrander Hut.
Screenshot of the Watch Duty app showing the Dome fire footprint in red with active hotspots in orange dots on the north end eastern perimeter of a fire footprint that is for 5 miles long and a mile wide or so. Here’s the largest one on my @raspishake.bsky.social. Just to clarify, you heard the first for a minute and second one for nearly 2min?! That’s bonkers. Do you suppose some of what you heard were triggered rockfalls? I wonder if anyone in Desolation will report stuff today.

The good news about the Piute Fire is that it’s surrounded by a LOT of granitic rocks of several intrusive suites, but the marshy meadows areas in drainages are forested and fairly dry now. Here’s Piute Lake In 2012. Next to a busy trail leading to Crabtree TH. share.watchduty.org/i/122922?ts=...

Vote #quartz! I found this doubly terminated Herkimer “Diamond” in NY a few years ago by cracking tons of dolostone searching for vugs coated in small quartz crystals (druzy) that are black from hydrocarbons. This piece opened, but not enough to let the crystal fall. I kept it like this b/c it’s rad

Really neat inversion evident this morning at the Dome Fire in Yosemite. Old smoke has followed the cold, dense, overnight air down into the surrounding drainages with a warmer layer of less dense air above being aided by morning light (energy) on the higher topography.
